My e-tron was much more consistent in charging, you can go all the way to 80% with the full 150kw and then to 90% before it dipped below 100kw.
There is something to be said for not needing to care about SoC when making charging decisions, you can stop after an hour and top back off to 100% in ten minutes, for example. I'll probably miss that as it doesn't really seem feasible to charge past 80% on road trips in the iX, based on how slow it gets at that point. If I compare range added though, the iX had attained the full range of my e-tron in about 30 minutes which is a bit faster, and that's not even considering that I wouldn't ever start from 1% SoC like they did , usually 20% -> 100% in 30ish. |

Not just range added over time (at which the eTron is admittedly fast), but total range. My iX at 80% has 290 miles of range, topping the eTron at 100%. So the equation should actually be comparing charging time for the iX from, say, 0-60/70%, compared to charging the eTron from 0-100%.

IX at 80% is actually about 80-100 miles more than my etron at 100%. It really was in the 190-210 range depending on weather

Lets hope they upped the curve, for me staying above 100 kw till 75% would be more than enough … the car is efficient for it’s size and I love it, every bit of it. There is a claim out here that states that they have found a way to charge from 0 to 90 % in 10 minutes without battery degradation, they tested it on current battery tech, so all it needs is an update, even if its 20, that would be more than enough … https://www.newscientist.com/article...90-in-10-mins/

Well... I suppose I may be an outlier. F450 is around 50G diesel and LX470 is 27G gasser, if I really fill it alllll the way up. The little vans/other company vehicles still take long enough to stop in the gas station and shop around, grab a drink & snack and head out. So, 10 min charge-n-go would be amazing.

Real-World numbers here (5 weeks, 4000 miles, all EA 150/350kW chargers about 40 charges):
At 350kW chargers: Baker, CA (twice): 170kW/199kW++, 15-75% in 30 min Ontario, CA (twice): 36kW (obviously malfunctioning, unplugged/moved)-156kW, 5%-60% in 30min At 150kW chargers: Vegas (6x): 90kW-130kW, 20-70% in 30 min SoCal: 30% Broken/Malfunction (<36kW), rest is about 115kW-130kW, 20-75% in 30min |

Google reviews are 50/50 for EA in Baker- with "almost all chargers were down". And there is an EVGo charging station there (as a backup)- but just checked the app- and everything was down except 50 kW chargers at EVGo. Have you found the EA chargers in Baker to be reliable?

I usually go by the PlugShare reviews because they tend to behave the full info about charging rate and current status. I don't make that stretch regularly but the EA chargers are always in use when I do.
The Baker station is currently PlugScore of 10/10. You can also hit Barstow Walmart as a backup. |

With long road trips, we are pretty spoiled in the Southwest regarding the EA network. Generally there's an EA charger every 50-80 miles on every major corridor like I5, I15, I10 etc. They key is to not try to plan your trips where you arrive at a charger with less than 10% and you can't make it to the next charger with enough charge. Generally for our cars, that means planning to arrive at chargers with 25-30% so worst case you have 75-85 miles in Efficiency mode to make it to the next charger. That being said, LA-Vegas is very well traveled and I believe EA makes extra sure that the Baker station and other ones on this route have solid uptime. I generally do a couple major road trips annually (previously in my F15 X5) and I'm sure this is pretty much most of us will do: LA (via Vegas) to SLC (Winter): I15 EA chargers every 80-100 miles LA to Bay Area (Napa): I5 EA chargers every 50-80 miles. On 101, biggest gap is between SLO and Monterey but you're good on a full charge. LA to AZ: I10, only 1 EA charger midway between Palm Springs On top of these, I'm doing a big trip this holiday season from LA to Vancouver/Whistler, then over to Banff, and back down through Idaho/SLC/Vegas. EA chargers are solid going up I5, and workable coming down Montana/Idaho and great past SLC back through Vegas: Excited to try my winter tire setup on this trip and excited to save $1000 in gas! |
