I've done serious math on the X3 as a CPO buy and running costs vs a lease and can tell you that there's fuck all difference in true costs if you flip the CPO after 3 to 4 years. It's like $40 month so may as well have new IMHO.

To get value from used you need to keep it a long time.

I usually keep my BMWs for 6 to 7 years. I buy new and replace at about 100K miles.

My M2 is plan on keeping for 10+ years unless it gets hit. I won’t keep a car that has had frame damage. Cosmetic damage is ok. I have only had one car that was traded in for frame damage. It was rear ended by an SUV going about 40 mph.

I have owned 2.5 vehicles in my 40+ years of driving, all bought new. The half is the one my spouse and I bought together. The first I owned for nearly 12 years. I sold it cause I moved out of the country. The other is now 21 years old with less than 150k on it (I ride a bike to work most of the year). I am looking to trade it in and will be looking for a used (~4 years) cause the new models I do not like as much as the previous model.

We always buy with the plan being to keep the car for a minimum of 10 years.

Current vehicles range from the oldest being a 2002 to the newest being a 2014 (bought used in 2015).

I always buy new. Don’t want somebody else’s hand me downs. I can afford it and what’s money for anyway. But, I do keep them awhile. Seven years usually, because I like buying the first year of a model and keep it for the duration of the life cycle of the model. Which is usually seven years. So I always have the “newest” model that way. And if you take care of them, they look like new cars for the whole seven years.

Same here- ever since I sold my E36 ///M I have probably bought and sold 12-15 cars in the span of 7-8 years and mostly new cars too. For some reason I can't hang on to a car longer than a year.

Long term.

The last new vehicle I bought was my 2000 Toyota Tundra 4x4 (19 years ago) and still drive it when I need to haul something or go on rough/slick roads. Since then I bought a used '95 M3 and drove it over 10 years before I bought the 2008 335i that I have been driving for the past 4+ years. All of my vehicles including my wife's '14 Honda CR-V (also bought used) have >100,000 miles. The '95 M3 has ~186,000 miles. The one and only car payment I had was ~30 years ago when I bought my first new vehicle when I graduated college and had a job offer in hand. I paid that off in <1 year.

I've had my TT since February 2003 and the TT RS since August 2011, and had an Elantra for 12-13 years and a B7 RS 4 for 8. My first M4 was a bit of an aberration at 3 years, but I hope to keep the current one for a long while.

Also, I still use an iPhone 4S.

I had a used '03 Ford Focus hatch for 2 years in high school, but I sold it when I went to college.

Then I had a used '06 Pontiac Grand for about 9 years. I sold it after I bought the '18 230i, my first new car.

I plan to keep the 230i for a long time. I've got a plan to mod it for mixed street and track use, so dialing it in should keep me occupied for a good while.

The cars I could see myself trading it in for would be the 2022 G-platform 2 Series if its really that much better, a 3 Series with an extra set of doors if I ever have a family, or an M4 if I've got cash to burn when I'm older.

Yes.

Those are some impressive numbers! My F30 is almost 7 years old and I would like to hang onto it till at least 2022 when I can jump into a new X3 or G20. The current offerings are tempting, but gotta fight the urge!

What was wrong with the first M4?

Thanks! I'd probably still have the Elantra if it wasn't for my girlfriend's Mini Cooper, too. Good luck on waiting; I'm not very patient when it comes to cars.

There was nothing wrong with the first M4, really. It was a gray 2015 with few options since I was dissatisfied with many of the bundles, and was my first RWD car and first BMW. It turned into my favorite car ever, and after red individual cars started showing up on here (all three Audis had been Misano red) and BMW redid their option packages, it seemed safe to get an "ultimate" version. Haven't been disappointed.

The math is different for every car. We've had great luck buying a end of year clearance model and then trading it in after a few years. We've also had great luck buying used sports cars with rare options then selling a few years later for near what we paid.

A brand new Luxury car looses 40-50% value in the first 2 years, IF you paid full msrp.

I think my wife will ensure that I don't unnecessarily throw money at a new car right now. Also, my F30 has been so good that I would rather fix the inevitable issues as they arise rather than have another big monthly car payment.

Good to hear that you got into another M4 optioned just as you wanted. These cars are too expensive and fun to have any niggles ruining the experience.

Interesting analogy about smartphones. I tend to get a new one every year or so. My logic is to get the most expensive feature packed phone, currently the iPhone XS Plus, which cost $1300 iirc then sell it the next year while the value is still high. Unlike cars, depreciation is not steep. It actually gets worse over time instead of losing most initially. I can sell this phone for $900 next year bringing the total cost to $1300-900=$400.

Let's see, my DD is a 2008 135i. I expect to pass 200k miles this summer.
I spend a lot of time picking out a car and keep it until it dies.

So do stoves, refrigerators, lawn mowers, hand tools, beds, eating utensils, TVs, computers, etc. I've never understood why people get so concerned over the "drop in value" of automobiles. They are just tools for transportation. Just like a stove is a tool for cooking.

I kept my E36 for 18 years. I could've kept it as my beater, but I didn't want to hassle with managing/maintaining two cars.

I would've kept any of my E30s long term as well, but they were all totaled (four of them) in accidents.

So by that math after 5 years you've lost 5x400= $2000 in depreciation swapping phones every year.

Apple iPhone 6s I bought in 2014 for new $750. Traded it in 2017 for a pixel 2xl ($230 trade in credit on a $900 pixel). So in 5 years I've lost about $500 in depreciation. Granted i'm not counting how much my pixel has depreciated in the last year and a half.

if you keep getting the latest stuff with regards to cars or phones or whatever its still going to eat you. just depends on how much of that you are comfortable with.

I wouldn't get a new phone exactly a year apart. It was usually 1.5 years or so, but you make some good points nonetheless. I probably can't use the same tactic on my current XS Plus since it is so much more expensive than my previous phones. Those were only around $800 at the time. So selling those phones for $600+ netted $200 out of pocket. So in 5 years total out of pocket would be in the $600 range (depending on the model and price increase as the models got more expensive). Considering you lost $520 on your 6S after 3 years, that's not too far off. The price to pay to have the upgraded device isn't as steep as one might expect.

But I digress. The point being that the phone analogy is not quite the same since the depreciation curve is very different than an automobile.
