3D Design Japan i8 Aero Program

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

Despite its hybrid power plant, the BMW i8 has been anything but subtle. Vertically raising doors provide an appropriately futuristic finishing touch to BMW’s signature blue “I” highlights and, let’s not forget, laser beam headlights. Indeed, the i8 was, as BMW aptly puts it, designed to shatter expectations. Sure, Its driving dynamics echo BMW’s enviable credo, but the car breaks convention in the way its been assembled—taking sustainability and responsibility further than ever before. It’s the period at the end of BMW’s manifesto.

It seems fitting then that 3D Design Japan, a name synonymous with only the highest quality and purposefully designed BMW aftermarket components, has taken up the task of crafting an i8 aero program. Actually “fitting” doesn’t quite do the program justice—it’s a perfect marriage of flagships. Looking at the 3D Design equipped i8 is like getting a glimpse into the future of automotive modification, and if this is any indication, the future is bright.

The full line from 3D includes a front lip, side skirts, rear diffuser, low rise wing, signature wheels, and exhaust. The program drips seamlessly into the interior as well, you’ll be hard pressed to find more beautiful accents than 3D’s pedals, shift paddles, and plush floor mats. Indeed, attention to detail has always been 3D’s cornerstone and on the sleek, sculpted i8 frame, its effect is amplified, electrified.

Rear diffuser is the nicest thing on this car. It actually looks really good. The front lip doesn't even wrap around the entire front bumper, looks like it doesn't even belong on the car.

Ooooo bucket seats. I was just saying to my friend who has an E46 M3 CSL, they would be good in the i8.

I love 3D Design, I'm actually going to get some interior upgrades from them on my E90, they don't have much but I like what they have.

That rear wing doesn't look very secure. If the i8 could really be transformed into a track car (which would take a lot of work) I'd prefer a chassis mounted wing like the following:

The i8 has Active Sound outside as well as inside the vehicle. That metal pipe on the left side behind the grille is where the speaker is for the vroom vroom noises you hear outside the car.

I realize that what I just typed sounds like a joke but I’m serious. First time I had an i8 on the lift I figured that could not be an actual exhaust pipe since the plastic grille in front of it would melt so I looked inside and could see the wiring and speaker in there. Maybe they put this external ASD inside a fake metal exhaust tip to help it sound more like a real exhaust note?

This does look great, little more aggressive than Vorsteiner. Now the main questions for me...does the exhaust add any HP, is it lighter and a sound clip in different modes would be superb.

The seats are dope, would love to see the car without the wing, not sold on it yet.

Let me know when you have one locally in Chicago with all the mods.....anybody interested yet?

The mods are all show, not go. Far more likely to have worse aero than the factory car in fact. No wind tunnel testing of course. And more weight.

Looks cool, but that's all.

I'd never dream of adding it to my car. Not just this kit, but any of them.
