Presume this means BMW link the key to your car's ECU or whatever and load it with unique encryption keys?
When I brought the new 'non-mated' key near my i8, it started reading 'connected' on the digital display. That tells me that encryption is configured as it is coded for the VIN - in turn creating an instant connection.

Mind you, despite being connected, it was non-functional until I actually mated the key.

Are you able to trigger pre-conditioning from the key?

You can do that with the normal key - just program the extra button to start pre-con. You need to be in range of the vehicle obviously though - or use the app on your phone to turn it on from anywhere.

Yes, has mostly everything that the BMW iRemote App does.

I know the app does this, I didn't know a regular key could be programmed. I'll look into that, thanks.

There's a menu somewhere that assigns a task to the key button with the diamond-shape on it. Certainly can be done on UK cars and very handy in this cold weather!
There's a few tasks you can assign to that button depending on your needs.

The US key is different, we have the red alarm button in lieu of the diamond.

Ahh, that sucks! Something to do with very large car parks, we don't have that problem in Europe.

Wonder if you could code the car to allow the menu option to customize the 'horn' key? The only physical difference is likely to be the picture on the button?

My thoughts exactly. I'll report back if I figure it out.

Technically I have the same and better functionality with my cell phone with the app and it was free!

See my cars state of charge, lock and unlock doors, location and a host of other options.

This thing is as big as a game boy! And to have duplicate efforts in my pocket just doesn't make sense.

With comfort access don't ever need to even take the key out!
