They won't. As part of the cost savings of BMW (e.g. moving to FWD), headlights on the lower end models will become optional.

Awesome!

Scott26 any word on headway for BMW to get DOT approval of the laser light technology for the US bound i8's? Is this in the works or not at this time?

I am hoping it will be approved in time for the 2nd model year cars

If you have the means to buy a new BMW i8, I guess the only thing “not to love” is the fact that you can’t buy one. They are 100% sold out, and BMW is making noises to the effect that this run of the 360 hp, 300 km/h hybrid supercar is going to be the ONLY run.
Don't know how much weight to put behind that but my sales manager says they've only been promised one with no indication it will be a running production. Might end up being like the 1M Coupe. Leave them wanting more. I guess that's a better problem to have than Porsche, who still have plenty of 918 allocations...looking into the GT3 wait list length the other day, the guy tried to up-sell me to a 918 when I mentioned my i8 order. The lack of concrete info from BMW is unprecedented. I don't think there has been any new official info (besides the videos) since the Press Release at the Frankfurt show debut in September.

Don't scare me like that, my deposit is for an MY 2015

I'm confident after attending the various BMW i8 events and speaking to various people there involved in the project that this is not true; there will be a 2nd year run, maybe even a 3rd.

Btw, even the 1M Coupe ran production for 2 model years.

The Z8, extremely limited, ran for 4 years. It was suggested that the i8 can be compared to the Z8 in terms of rarity and exclusivity.

Hehe, then you're set. I believe the i8 is being sold as a 2015 model when it goes on sale this year.

Are you sure about that? My understanding was 2014 was the first model year, 2015 the second. Reason being when I spoke to my dealer, his first year allocations were already spoken for and in the contract he listed it as a 2015 i8.

Again the lack of concrete info rears its head. I've heard it referred to as the 2014 and 2015 i8. I assume they would just go ahead and call it the 2015, since by the time it's released, they will have been selling 2014 model cars for 8 months. It's either going to be an extremely short 2014 MY or a slightly long 2015 MY.

I think it's just sad I know WAY more about the M3/M4 which are supposed to come out months after the i8.

Glad BMW is still innovating in lighting. I have the adaptive LEDs on my car and they're pretty nice... More bling than function in terms of lighting quality over xenon though if you ask me. They're nice and pure white, maybe a bit better than xenon, but not dramatically better for sure.

As for all the comments about, "why isn't xenon standard" on 1 and 3 series... It's cost. Those headlights are darn expensive. No business can just give stuff away to meet the appearance of being luxury... The product needs to be priced appropriately. So the higher end vehicles get them standard as most all will opt to pay for then anywhere - it's just baked into the price of the car. Many 1 and 3 drivers may opt to save a few bucks, hence they're optional.

LEDs are standard on the new Corolla.

On a related note, I had a hope BMW was holding back announcements for specific events. Maybe announce that Laser Headlights were now DOT approved at CES this week (Audi unveiled their laser headlight equipped Sport Quattro Concept there). Here's hoping we get more (i.e. any) info on ordering and delivery dates for the US at the NAIAS next week.

Coming back to this subject, I can't find laser lights at optional equipment list. LEDs only - are lasers included and combined with optional LEDs or shall we see pure laserlight package later on?

I have not seen any information insofar as what countries will actually be able to order the i8 with laser headlights. The only concrete info that was in the BMW press release back in September was that the US isn't getting them at least for the foreseeable future.

I have leafed through BMW Sweden and Germany price lists but no info about laserlights. Only "extended LEDs" optional. But BMW is still telling that lasers are coming autumn 2014 with i8?

So basic is full-LED standard, then we have "extended full LED" and then "extended full LED with lasers" that is not priced yet?? Ordinary extended LED says nothing about lasers and is only 300 euros add-on...I suppose lasers are significantly more.

EDIT: BMW Germany website says "available 11/2014" for laser-LED functions. But BMWi Facebook page 11.3.2014 says like this: "Extraordinary efficiency, #BMW eDrive and #Laserlight: The all-new #BMWi8 will be delivered starting June 2014." It really seems that lasers are not available from the very start, but marketing has been fairly confusing with this.

Below press release from my files:

BMW Laser Light goes into series production.

The BMW i8 is the first production vehicle to feature
the innovative light technology.

Munich 10.2.2014

From the autumn of 2014, BMW will be the first manufacturer worldwide to offer a production vehicle equipped with headlamps featuring a completely new laser light concept. With this laser light technology, which was first presented at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the BMW i8 (fuel consumption combined: 2.1-0.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 49–0 g/km) is not only making automotive history as a plug-in hybrid sports car, but also as the first production vehicle to incorporate the totally new laser light technology. Whilst the basic version of the BMW i8 is equipped with high-intensity, energyefficient full LED headlamps, the optional laser boost feature additionally ensures a high beam range of up to 600 metres. This means that the already high illumination range of the modern LED high beam is doubled. Thanks to the new laser technology, it is possible to increase energy efficiency by a further 30 percent compared to already highly power-saving LED light.

A highly intensive and efficient form of light.

In addition to lowering power requirement, BMW Laser Light illuminates the road ahead with a significantly higher light intensity without heating up the surrounding area. Laser diodes are ten times smaller than conventional light diodes. They help to save not only available installation space inside the headlamp, but also weight. The size of the reflector surface can be reduced by a factor of up to ten vs. LED light. The height of the reflector has now been reduced from the previous 9 cm to less than 3 cm. The light of a laser headlamp is extremely bright, similar to daylight, which is perceived by the human eye as pleasant. Several high-performance diodes emit a strongly bundled beam via special lenses onto a fluorescent phosphorus substance inside the headlamp. This substance transforms the beam into an exceptionally bright white light that is ten times more intensive than conventional light sources. Due to their highly intensive and virtually ideal beam properties, laser diodes render the overall system even more efficient. In conjunction with the camera-aided digital highbeam assistant, dazzling of oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead is reliably eliminated.
