Wahoo! I just got word that my i8 is officially on order and I was able to get it with the Tera World package. The target production date has slipped from week 32 to week 38, but I can live with the delay in order to get the interior I want. I felt the Dahlbergia brown color scheme would go better with the Crystal White Pearl metallic (with frozen grey accent) exterior.

After drooling over the i8 for several years since I first saw the concept car at the LA Auto Show, and having put down a deposit nearly a year ago, it's very exciting to see my name on a production order for the car. Now starts the even more exciting wait for the car to go into production and make it's wait to me. I'm sure I'll be checking the vehicle status via the BMWNA owner's site on a regular basis.

Many thanks.
Laser lights were planned to be made available from November this year, however it was never made clear whether this was November build or November delivery. That info was on BMW UK's website, but it also lined up with what my dealer was telling me at the time.
However, the website has changed and it now says "A second broad frame is added as a distinguishing design feature when the optional high-beam headlights with laser light technology* are selected. The BMW Laserlights option considerably increases the range of the high beam and enhances its illumination. ...*Planned availability from the end of 2014." (ref. link).
Again, it doesn't stipulate whether "Planned availability" is availability to spec, availability to build, or cars actually being delivered with laser lights (i.e. available to the consumer).

It's worth baring in mind that laser lights are for main beam only, so you might not find you get the benefit from them as often as you think you would.

As for the canvassing of opinion to spec them and the price, it came from my dealer (BMW Sheffield), who rang me up to ask me if I still wanted to spec them considering the expected (rather extravagant) cost. N.B. I had it written into my contract that my order was subject to me having the right to spec laser lights when they became available.

Hope that helps.

Many thanks for the response.

My car is scheduled to deliver this year so perhaps this is why they are telling me that I simply cannot have these lights.

No worries. You may still be able to get them on your car however; it will depend on when your spec is locked down (can't be changed). If your spec freeze is post laser lights becoming available, you should be able to amend the spec and have them fitted. (Obviously this won't be the case if BMW don't make it an option until the end of the year though.)

Ordered!

By great fortune, the guy just ahead of me on my dealer's i8 list declined his option, so I'm in! Immediately put in my order. Blue, Pure Impulse - Carum Spice Gray interior and turbine wheels. The order was picked up immediately, but I still need to get a projected build date and anticipated delivery window. We assume later in the 4Q.
So, the excitement and anticipation grows. I truly hope this car delivers, is reliable and lives up to the hype. I've owned F-cars, P-cars, Astons, R8's, Z8's, etc. and hope for another unique and rewarding ownership experience.

Mine is claimed to be left from factory and on it's way to dealer. Delivery should follow within couple of weeks - hopefully ASAP!

Pitkis, yours may be the first on this forum to take delivery. Can't wait to hear more about it and see some pictures once it arrives.

Well I got some good news and some not so good news on my i8 order today. Not so good news first: in contrast to what I was previously told, they were not able to get the Tera World interior, which I wanted to go with the Crystal White Pearl exterior. I was told that there were some production issues, but I suspect they just went back to their original plan to provide initial cars only with the Pure Impulse package. It wasn't my preference, but I'm sure I'll still love it and there are some cool things that come with the package that I like.

Now for the good news. My car went into production today! I was told it is one of the earliest US cars to be built. Given the production duration and likely shipping time, the car should arrive at my dealer in early September. You can bet I'll be checking the status online every step of the way with the info contained in my previously posted link ( http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/07/14/ho...d-to-delivery/). Can't wait to take the car onto some of the SoCal canyon roads like the journalists did as part of the Malibu launch event.

Checked on the status of my car's production today and learned the expected production completion date is August 12. Given that it started production yesterday (July 15) I was surprised to hear it taking nearly a month to complete. Guess they are being very methodical about it, which is a good thing.

Didn't you say you have Week 32? That would be August 3rd. Yesterday would be Week 29 -- so I imagine that the status you're seeing now is some sort of pre-production phase where the car is not actually in production yet.

Either way you've gotta be beaming with excitement ... all of you Week 31, 32, etc. guys are *this* close for the i8 becoming a reality!

Edit:
While some of the parts are preassembled, the actual production time for the BMW i8 is 20 hours total. (See attached PDF, last page).

I thought it sounded really early. Part of me got excited because he was week 32 and I assumed they had moved the build up and therefore mine might move up, but no movement on my front, still holding at week 33 (Aug 10th-17th).

Also FWIW, if you're calling the BMWNA hotline to get info, I've found that you can get slightly more info (and slightly more specific info) when speaking with a rep vs. just using the automated system with your production number.

They might not be able to give you the actual status code, but can say with more detail at which stage the car currently sits.

What I do know (at least if I remember correctly from my X6M build) is once the production starts or is really close, the full VIN number should be available, not just the production number.

My original build date was week 32, but it got moved up. I received the information about the start of production status (code 150) from the BMWNA agent, and have since confirmed it with the interactive phone response. It was the automated phone response which indicated an estimated production completion date of August 12. I've tried to get the status as well from the My BMW section of the BMWNA web site, but for some reason the sign-in process isn't working for me today. I registered some time ago, and have accessed the My BMW section before, so not sure why it isn't working today.

And I do have the full VIN for the car.

Wow, ok. Then the only other thing I can think of is they are out of Photon Torpedoes until August 11th, and can't fully equip the car before then ...

Well here's hoping they move week 33 orders to week 30 next week. Pure speculation I wonder if the color selected is having any bearing on production. Might paint in batches for logistics. Or maybe the LA/NY/Miami dealers are just getting the earliest builds
