Sigh... what's wrong with people?

Came out to my car after dinner the other night and this...

Why must people be this way? Happened in Santa Clara, California.

Thank you. It was painful. Yeah there was surveillance and you can see the guy's face in it. I filed a police report and they said they don't care about the footage... My insurance said they wanted it and would deal with the police on my behalf. Crazy.

I lost an empty backpack that I forgot to take out of the rear seat. It had my passport in it. Really annoying and sucks. My dealer is taking really good care of the car, but it's waiting on the window regulator motor to arrive from Germany. So I'm out of a car for about 2 weeks.

James May (of Top Gear and Grand Tour fame) recently said that motor bike thieves should be killed, no excuses. I think his sentiments should extend to people who do things like this. Never mess with a man's automobile, it's not just a car, it's a pride and joy, it's a lot of sweat, tears, hard work and years of grafting for most people.

I feel your pain.

That's awful man. I hate to say but in Cali get use to more behavior like this from spoiled little twats who are mad at the world.

Sorry about the window. A lot of people are just bad or desperate. Most of those who are desperate are on drugs.

That is so freaken disappointing. Sorry that it happened. Hopefully the dealer will have her fixed in under 2 weeks. Did they hook you up with a good loaner to ease the pain?

Thanks guys.

Yeah, it was horrible. It was a stupid oversight from me, forgetting to take my bag with me. Definitely don't put anything in your backseat. And I'm never going to park in these types of unattended parking lot anymore. It's going to be an area with high-foot traffic from now on.

BMW of Fremont was nice, they put me into a new 2017 X5M. So I'm thankful for that. Still have to wait up to 15 days for the regulator motor to arrive though, which is unfortunate.

Sorry to see you go through this. Unfortunately, the frequency of this type of random break-in has been on the rise here in the Bay Area, especially in San Francisco. As you surmised, it's best to park within higher foot traffic areas and to leave all personal effects out from plain site within the vehicle.

Nice to see a fellow Bay Area member.

Waiting for parts sucks. I had to wait about that long for a new headlight after we determined it was cracked in my hit and run incident.

Breaking in is no joke around here. If you've ever been to Mitsuwa, you know how jam packed that place is during lunch. A car was broken into in the middle of the parking lot - they don't care.

Greetings from South Bay!

Wow that is insane. These crooks are aggressive. And the police don't really care. Apparently there's an average of 70 auto smash and grab cases a day in SF now.

Sorry about this gxsolace .

And I was thinking people wouldn't do smash and grab on exotic cars. I should know better... And Santa Clara is not far from home. I'll remember to take my backpack with me from now on.

Yeah definitely don't leave anything in your car. I'm told some people even open their glove compartment and stuff before leaving their car, showing that everything's empty.

I might use that strategy from now on.

I do this strategy and I've never had a break in on any of my cars. If I do by any chance leave stuff in my car- I would put it in the trunk, even if its just a sweater.

Santa Clara police rejected my police report saying that the information I supplied was "suspect." And didn't explain anything else. I called and said I have the footage of the guy's face, and they said "it's useless, we don't have facial recognition tech."

The issue with leaving stuff in the trunk of the i8 is that the trunk is glass too. So I'm probably not going to leave anything in the car ever, and open the cover inside the trunk so people can see there's nothing in there either.
