I just got a Panasonic 37" Plasma. HD is amazing! Anyways, my question is, I am using the DVD player that previously was used with my regular TV. It's hooked up with component video cables. The picture quality looks great, but there are vertical lines all through out the image. Not sharp lines, it kinda looks like what cardboard looks like (wavy).

My regular TV never did it when watching DVDs. It's also not the cable, because I bought a new one (they both are philips cables though). I did and hooked up my DVD player with regular RCA cables, and the lines disappeared. Obviously, the picture quality degraded.

Is there a compatibility problem? Is my DVD player too old? I have two Component Inputs on my Plasma, and they both give the vertical lines.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

I'm assuming you've checked the connections and everything is connected correctly. Also, just because your cable is new doesn't mean it's not broken. It doesn't happen often, but I've seen a few cables fail out of the box. It's a little harder to tell with an analog signal, but still possible. Is your DVD player progressive scan? If not, it's most likely outputting an analog signal which won't upconvert very well in the TV.

I don't think it is Progressive scan. That's probably the difference.

Typically, vertical or horizontal lines are a resolution/interlace issue. Sounds like it's time to upgrade your DVD player! There are a few very good upconverting DVD players (Panasonic and Denon both make some of the best at their price points), or you could go with the new BlueRay HD DVD platform.

Could be the issue, but I doubt.
I am running the DVD I urchased in 1998 (non progressive scan) on my HD (LCD), no problems at all.
My other DVD is also non-progressive scan, no issues.

Sounds more like connection problem, or even a bad connector on the TV...

you need to get an HDMI DVD player and get the HDMI cable to connect to your tv........picture is SICK!!!!!!!!!

+1....it makes not sense if your DVD player is putting out high quality video and you cant get it to your TV

You don't need HDMI to transport great video from your DVD player to your TV. Component is fully capable of transmitting a High Def signal.

It depends so much on the TV's electronics, and you're using LCD... If the TV is incapable of cleanly upconverting an interlaced signal through the component inputs you'll see this type of 'lining' in the signal.

try to connected to the other component video it can be the imput in the TV also try another DVD disc who knows try any THX one like ( cars, finding mimo, star wars etc...)

check the aspect ratio in the DVD menu maybe is that make sure you select wide screen. and check the TV menu.

if not get a new DVD the best DVD is the Oppo it kick the ass of any upscaling DVD check the ratings http://www.oppodigital.com/ I have the OPDV971H if your new TV is not 1080p get that one, if it is get the 981HD

the 970 sucks.

now you can get a blue-ray or a HD but if I was you I will wait to see with is going to be the wining format.

ohh btw: does oppo dvd's read any disc any zone, burn dvd, DIVX, kodak etc.. you name it is so cool that for error one day I put the fast and the furious game instead of the movie and it shows 3 videos of the game that you normaly see after wining I was like wow !!!

So, are you telling me that my DVD may work on LCDs but not on Plasmas???
Never heard of it. Never seen the sticker on the DVD player saying -- Use it only with LCDs...

The sampling out of the DVD player is at Fs rate and both, LCD and Plasma simply upconvert it to the same rate (and freq) for the output, therefore, I don't see it as an issue...looking from the engineering perspective. It could be an issue with that specific unit, or connection. But, FCC makes sure that if the "X" DVD player works with latest LCD TVs, it should with the latest Plasmas too.

Noticed the same thing with my 'old' progressive scan DVD player when I upgraded to plasma (50 inch Vizio -- love it BTW, Pioneer 50" was nicer but 2x as much) and connected via component cables. So I upgraded to Oppo 971 upconverting DVD (I can watch all the DVDs I already have and wait for the format war and HD-DVD/BluRay disc and player prices to settle down) and the picture is spectacular. Oppo 971 includes DVI & HDMI cables in the box.
