How Do You Guys normally Do Trades On Private Sale Forum?

Hey,
I'm looking to trade my exhaust with someone from a 'WTT' on the private sales forum.. He suggested that I send him mine first and then he will send me his.. I have never really done a WTT before. He is in Hong Kong and I am in Canada.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

First of all, I just wanna say that I have absolutely no experience on this kind dealing.

I'll still go ahead and give my honest input (even though I may be incorrect in some aspects):

Hong Kong is a long ways away from Canada, therefore it may be much more riskier because of the greater distance.

Also, I'm confused on why he'd ask you to ship first.

In this kind of situation, I feel that there's a much greater chance for a misunderstanding to happen.

To reduce the chances of any misunderstanding, it would be wise if both of you ship at the same time, and also exchange tracking #'s with one another at that same time.

It would be highly beneficial to exchange actual (detailed) images of the product right before the time of shipping.

Any and all questions should be asked before shipping, such as:
  • If all neccessary parts are included
  • Any damages/condition
  • If it's the correct version and/or fitment
  • Return/exchange poilcy if not completely satisfied
  • Name, address, email, and direct phone number of one another

This is just a thought, but I wonder if there's a way in having some kind of assurance, such as Paypal (even though there's no money involved).

Please don't take my advice alone, since I'd rather wait and see if others can better respond to your question...

I wouldn't do it. His asking to ship first sends a red flag up for me, and you have no recourse if it goes badly. Unless you can insure your item and be assured of compensation, I'd steer clear. Sorry to be a buzzkill, but I've seen too many bad deals.

Or you could use your brain and do what Dark said. I would never have thought of that...

Just don't do it. Paypal is BS. They can just do a charge back claiming they never received it and then you're fucked.

I wouldn't do trades with someone who's out of the country and especially if they have no itrader and/or few posts. If I wanna do a trade it would be with a reputable member or local. Even then I would ask them to put a deposit first before I send out those things.

Deposit on paypal. Take the money out of your account before shipping for safe keeping.

Just provide a tracking number and get insurance on shipping the exhaust. Do it as if you were selling it. Once the other guy ships his and provides a tracking # then you refund it. Trading is shady no matter what. But at least this way you've got less of a chance of losing your exhaust AND pay pal stealing your money afterwords.

Again thanks all for the quick answers.
He seems like a 'medium-reputable' member on this board but possibly higher rep/posts on other boards.

He says he no longer has his stock exhaust so if we were to ship at the same time it wouldn't really work for him. I had inquired about a Paypal deposit earlier without response, but I think i will make this a requirement if we actually go through with anything. As well as thorough pictures with him writing his name on a piece of paper IN the pictures to at least prove without any doubt he has the unit. (There are youtube videos of him testing the unit already under the same screenname he has here, as well as a review of it he posted earlier last yr.) Also, I will ask for a description as Nawaaz suggested of all the possible fitment, parts, 'refund', etc.

I told him as assurance, I will get my BMW dealership to call him and take pictures of my exhaust before sending it over (and take pictures of the box, etc.) to give him piece of mind. (that's where my exhaust is currently located.)

Does this sound like a fair arrangement for us both if I decide to go through with it?
As of now I am not sure if I will or not.

^^ I've heard stories of people here being SOL once the person removed the money from their account and have gotten scammed. I'm talking about thousands of dollars for things like rims yet paypal never really pursued them. I dont think they'd send a collection agency after you because they're not out of any money and they still make a profit either way.

Ask yourself this, CATCH_M3:

Is whatever item your trying to get worth all this trouble?

If it turns out to be a scam, how sour are you going to feel?
If it turns out to be legit, but for some reason communication ceases, and item is significantly delayed, are we going to be reading posts about said situation?

That is extremely risky. I would only consider trading if they were local. The fact that your shipping first is also weird. I definitely wouldn't ship until they send theirs first. And about paypal, I don't trust it to much as I've been scammed on there and never got my money back.

Unless you can find others you trust that can vouche for him, then I would only do a trade face to face.

Consider this...

How much are you saving by doing an international transaction? Is it really worth the chance of it falling through?
