Does this look broken?
Yesterday I was in Jiu Jitsu and ended up rolling sideways on my ankle during a brief game we play after class. NO DTC . I ended up dropping all my weight on it... This is a picture 30 seconds AFTER I rolled on it... Does it look broken? The swelling has come down a bit but I cannot walk on it.. I can use the heal or ball of the foot to support myself up, but cannot put weight on the foot to take any step..
Do you think this is somethign to wait out a few days and see where it goes, then make an appointment if it doesn't progress? I tried hosting the picture in photobucket but the site is really slow and not working correctly. |

While a picture is worth a thousand words, this one is saying nothing. The only proper course of action is to go have it checked. Don't wait. Get it X-rayed as soon a possible at the Emergency Room.

You really think an Xray is an immediate need? Are the consequences bad for not having it checked out and addressed right away, granted it is actually broken.

The sooner you have it plated/casted/immobilized, the sooner you'll be healed. Don't waste your time suffering and procrastinating.
Any doctor will suffice - skip the ER. He/she will order xrays, and refer you to an orthopedic clinic if it's fractured. To cut out the middleman, call a local orthopedic center to see if your insurance needs a doctor referral first. They can take xrays there. Good Luck! Edit - if you don't have insurance, go to the orthopedic center and avoid the ER. |

my ankle looked like that about 4 years ago, after I rolled it playing racketball...I friggin stepped on it sideways...It looked MUCH worse than it felt though and was not broken, but to this day it is still swollen!

It could be just a bad sprain. Worst scenario is a broken ankle. But because both injuries would cause swelling in the area you need a doc to physically check it out. Additionally, whether broken or sprained, you will not be able to put pressure on your foot for at least a month and 1/2.
In the meantime - you need to wrap it up as tight as possible and immobilize your foot completely. Ice it frequently to bring the swelling down. But GO SEE A DOC MAN! My internet diagnosis is complete. Ill send you a bill in the mail. Next!

Take the general wisdom and have it looked at.
Ice it, immobilize it, and find out whether or not it's broken. It'll heal either way, but if you have managed to break it (which I think is probably unlikely), it will need to be set or immobilized in a way that it won't heal "badly" and give you problems down the road. I love the internet, but it never ceases to amaze me when I see a post like this. It's like taking a picture of your kitchen on fire and posting, "Hey guys, do you think this fire will spread to the rest of the house?" No doctors here, or if they are, they can't tell squat by looking at a blurry photograph of a swollen ankle. Ice it to reduce swelling, wrap it or brace it to immobilize it, go see a professional and listen to what they have to say. It's going to bother you badly for at least 1.5-2 months and probably be painful under pressure for 3-6 months. |

Looks and sounds like what i did. I'd have it checked. For me, it was a torn ligament in my ankle. I had a brace and a cane for awhile.
Please check that out...cuz i did it while training in Muay Thai, and like you, we use our footing for agility, stepping etc. After I tore mine, it's tough to get back into it without being too cautious. Good luck. |

PROBABLY, if he's gonna wait to "go over it" with you tomorrow, it's not broken. He already go a report back from X-ray that there were no fractures, but there may be other indications of soft tissue damage that the X-ray vaguely revealed and you may need more testing.
OR, he's just going to give you the directions to help speed your recovery from the bad sprain. |
