So, 988 miles in, this morning I had a Drivetrain Fault: Drive Moderately, full performance not available, pop up.

See dealer.......

Anyone else had this problem?

I've seen that it cropped up on 535's a couple of years ago and was mainly down to a kink in a tube that fed the turbo engine.

I'm going to call the dealer, however since I'm in the City for a meeting this morning, may drop by after that.

Yeah, could be anything from a faulty sensor, boost leak, etc. The more complex they get the more points of failure they have. I had a camshaft position sensor go bad after 800 miles in a new C63, you'd have thought they had replaced the engine with a out of balance washing machine it shook so bad. A message saying "Drive Moderately" is a little less alarming.

I have 1,181 trouble free miles so far on the i8. But my 2006 650i had an iDrive that kept failing and was overheating and telling me to stop, my wife's 2010 535GT sputtered to a stop twice after 30 days at the dealer, and my 2013 650GC has had its engine replaced. These cars are very complicated and when you push them they sometimes break. (The first two cars were deemed lemons and we were refunded almost all our money.)

The last thing one wants with an i8 is have it declared a lemon, of course, especially those unlucky buyers who paid a boatload over MSRP. Because BMW won't be refunding the tribute fees.

I hope your problem is a minor one, a bad switch or relay or some such. And that it is back in operation soon.

I love them and BMW steps up to the plate when it screws up. I was in the wilderness for many years with Mercedes, but living in the Santa Monica Mountains, where the roads are twisty and fast, brought me back to BMW. There's nothing quite like it.

Sure, Porsches, Ferarris and some Audis are quick, but I like the spacious BMW cabins and styling. (The styling of all Porsches that wear four doors is absolutely hideous.)

The Mercedes, the only other car I would consider, has become more and more ungainly. The new S Class is ugly and clumsy looking when viewed from the side. It looks like three design ideas stuck together and signed off on by a committee of pencil pushers. There's no coherence to it. The new SL looks like the last SL and has not been improved by the years. The nicest looking Mercs are the new C Class, and I'm too old and picky for a C Class. (My law partner swears by them, but he only drives from Santa Monica to our office in Century City.)

Other than a Bentley, which is too heavy for my tastes, I'll stick with BMW. I really like the new i8.

Oh god. My father was notorious for buying the first of any new BMW model. He had the first X5 4.4i Sport to come into the dealership (electric door release next to the easiest access to the battery, doors that would freeze shut at the drop of a hat, and more), the first 745iL (1st year of 1st gen iDrive), etc. Compared to those cars, the i8 has been absolute heaven. It says something about the car as a whole if people are able to look over such large issues.

Agreed on the 4 door panamera. I do like the cayenne and macan though. I had MB and Audis to but will stick with BMW as well! My X5 diesel is a monster! (had it for 4 years without any problems)

LoL... I was the first in NL with an X5 4.4 and had exactly the same problem, pull the handle and *POP* the door wouldn't open again.
