JFC, I get they smashed the front fascia for the sake of efficiency and to keep up with the enlargement of grilles but what the hell is up with the back? The lights are completely flush with the rear panels, zero character or 3D effects and the entire back looks like someone took a coarse sander and wiped it out.

I think this is shameful from the same company that designed the F8x GTS OLEDs.

I have a deposit in the Hummer EV 3X, not sure I will go forward with it, as other new EV SUVs will be out by then (2023) but it is way better looking than this iX. The Rivian looks nice, want to see reviews and sales before putting down a deposit on an entirely new vehicle from a new company.

The Rivian will be a better truck in every way

The Hummer is 9000 pound crowd killer

Regardless make sure you lease it

I thought the same but with Ford building the F150 on the Rivian's platform and Amazon ordering 100,000 vehicles with 10,000 already on the roads and Rivian being a 10 year old company, it gave me some reassurances.

Amazon as well as Ford are invested in Rivian

It is probably the best truck you can choose

Yes, I was aware about Ford and Amazon. However Ford is no longer using the Rivian skateboard on their new EVs and they are no longer doing the rebadged Rivian as a Lincoln EV either. Both of those things give me pause. I actually prefer the Lucid Air and their tech to Rivian, but they are even more vaporware at this point.

I'm sorry but what do you love about it. It doesn't look functional at all. Every climate button is gone, you have to press MENU to change the fan speed or turn on seat heating. All the iDrive buttons are capacitive with no dividers between them, how are you supposed to navigate that soup while driving the car without looking down and studying it? Real buttons with different shapes and textures are like that for a reason, so you can grab it and use it effortlessly.

Nothing here is really an upgrade over what we have in current cars, they just put the screens together with lots of black space around them, it doesn't look natural at all compared to current cars with the recessed instrument screen and the infotainment screen that kind of springs out of it.
Yeah, you're right! It's not an easy set up. I just liked it because it looked very clean and minimalistic just by looking at it.

Those are new shy-tech buttons with haptic feedback on the iDrive controller

Super cool tech… You'll get used to the new buttons really quick

You got to have a lot of faith in a brand new car company, with your fingers crossed that there won't be much growing pain along the way.
Building a car is a lot more complicated than having a list of promising specs.

They are very technically orientated and they clearly know exactly what they're doing and considering how much bloody money has been dumped into them by investors I'd say they're definitely on the right track

Same here. And the futuristic and minimalist look continues to grow on me. EVs are clearly the future and I think it's great the design is also futuristic and different. I 100% think that in a few years, all the other conventional looking BMWs (X3, X5, etc.) will quickly look very dated.

Clean and minimalistic just means spartan. Thing is, none of the functions you need in a car (climate, media, nav) are actually gone. So how are you activating them? By buttons that are now on a screen, buried in a menu, instead of something physical on the surface. It's not actually cleaner or simpler at all, just buried, hidden, and harder to activate. It's not worth the hit to functionality just for a "clean" look.

I wouldn't glamorize this by using the "shy tech" marketing jargon, it's just a capacitive button like we've had for years. It has no physical definition to make it easy to use without looking, which was the whole point of the iDrive controller in the first place. Why would I want to "get used" to something that's functionally worse?

I wonder if that new glass iDrive knob even still tilts left and right like the current one? Tilting the knob to go back is one of my most used functions.

and they look fabulous!

I played around with their configurator and my well equipped Rivian SUV is building out to 110k CAD whereas the well equipped iX I keep buiding on the bwm.ca site is sitting at 120k CAD.

IF (and that is a big IF) they are well built, have decent after sales support, deliver on the promised range, use materials on par with BMW, etc., I am not sure I could convince myself to get the more expensive iX instead of the Rivian SUV. They are not direct competitors, but the Rivian front end looks better than the BMW, and it is a bigger (maybe too big for me), more practical vehicle and it looks very nice in pics. I prefer the exterior look of the Rivian, interior they look very different but I am not leaning more one way or the other. The material feel, fit and finish will be more important in that respect.

There are a few small red flags that I have seen so far with them.
  • They currently don't seem to charge anything for the third row of seats in their configurator, that seems odd to me. To me this implies that the pricing will likely change as they get ready to start production and will likely make them more expensive than originally thought. Will be more than happy to be wrong about this.
  • They are saying that they will offer mobile service to all Rivian owners "anywhere in the US and Canada"... This doesn't directly affect me as I live in the Montreal area and expect there to be decent service around the city, but if I ever go to Chibougamau and need a small repair, I don't think they will be able or willing to come all the way there to work on my car... I mean if somehow they can make that work, great, but it does not look feasible to me. I expect them to walk that back at least in Canada to have a coverage map where a high % of our population resides.
  • Further to the previous point, while trying to find a list of service centers, the only information I find makes it seem that they will have one in Vancouver... and that's it for Canada. This is not an official list but compiled by people on the forums based on job postings (and i did not dig deep into their forums to see if the list has been updated over time or not). I have a hard time believing that they would not have at least one in Toronto (and Montreal, Quebec city, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary...) so a full official list from them would be nice. I have no idea how companies like BMW deal with customers that are very far away from the nearest dealership for warranty covered items and perhaps they partner up with local shops and maybe Rivian could do the same at least initially.
  • They have in the past said they would have level 3 autonomous driving (IMHO not feasible any time soon) however as I look for that info on their site, they seemed to have backpedaled on that claim (which is good) and will offer driver assistance similar to what my X5 has today. I do like the fact that they have not continued stating that they will deliver L3 autonomy, but it also means that there may be other promises, like performance, range, price, etc. that may have been "optimistic" and will be "updated" for real production. Some might not be super important for most (i.e. if 0-100km/h is 4.0s instead of 3.0s) but others like price, range, charge time, etc. may be deal breakers.

Anyway in the end, more choices for us is a great thing. To each their own and hope that everyone is happy with whatever they end up buying.
