Ahi Sustainability

So I was at dinner in a nice restaurant last night, and for my entree I ordered the seared Ahi Tuna. The girl I was with got offended and told me I shouldnt be ordering that since it is being over fished and is no longer sustainable.

2 questions.

1. Is this just a bunch of hippie BS, or is there actually something to what she said?
2. If the fish is already caught, cleaned, prepared and at the location, is there really much harm in ordering it instead of having it being thrown out the next day?

LOL! I really wanted to do something like that, but there were no other animal rights unfriendly options on the menu.

Its a bit of a long story, but the short version its a girl I used to date, we tend not to get along, and we were both there for a mutual friend's graduation.

I'd go catch a yellowfin 150 miles south of SD right now, sear that bitch & tell her to suck on that for sustainability.

FYI, 'red flag' for any broad that gets "offended" by what you order.

The moment she said that is the point where you need to resort to the one night stand mentality. Wine & Dine, piitb, then kick her to the curb.

Who cares? Eat whatever the hell you want. She's a nobody. If it's your girl that you're in a committed relationship and you actually respect her, then I would reconsider. Hell, actually no I would not, I'd drop her the first night if she told that to me.

Its all being over fished. According to some reports seafood as we know it might be exhausted by 2040. I'm sure theres some truth to that... in the sense that its going to get a lot more expensive (supply and demand curves).

Eat what you want while its cheap-- let the free market decide what part of the environment you want to destroy-- just ask BP about that one lol

There's a ton of fish available for consumption here lol...

No, that is not concrete, it is millions of dead fish after the BP oil spill.

I love baby seal, especially when it's fresh clubbed.

Yes. Back in the boy scouts we used to go to the North pole camping. We made sure that we packed our clubs so that we can enjoy some freshly clubbed baby seal.

1. Yes there are some truth to what she said, but not as extreme as the tree huggers make it.
2. Some say by not consuming the fish, even it means the restaurant will throw it out, you are helping because you are lowering overall demand. Next time, the restaurant will order less fish from suppliers, and suppliers will buy less fish from vessels, and vessels will fish for less, because demand is low.
But I think that's a load of BS, by not consuming, the 1st and most apparent change is going to be price. Price will come down to drive the demand back up, and until the price is lower than what it takes to catch the fish, will overfishing stop.
3. In the end who cares, just say "if I order organic salad, can I PIITB?"
