First Blood - Major 'star' in windshield

I am a little peeved but not surprised that the first damage to my vehicle is a crack in the windshield.

I was driving to the house to let the dog out on a 4 lane road in moderate traffic with my position being about 25 meters behind the vehicles ahead of me. When the rock hit it sounded like a rifle shot and left a star with a radius of about 1.5 inches near the bottom right hand corner of the window (passenger side).

A little context: The roads where I live are terrible..even in the nice parts of town. Debris and rocks are always on the edges of the road. I typically go through 2-3 windshields per year. Last year it was the 328d, the X5, and the M6.
The previous year it was exactly the same.

Now I'm curious...does anyone else have similar experience with damaged windshields? Secondarily, has anyone else had damage inflicted on their vehicle?

Cheers-mk

MKSixer - Condolences. You will be shocked at the cost of a replacement windshield because of the HUD. Let us know what happens!

Also might look into protection films for windshields. Leno had one put on his P1 windshield

Around the 5:20 mark. Haven't tried it on the windshield before but it might be a good preventative measure considering where you live and how expensive windshields are getting.

Thanks MB.

I have actually been very impressed with the hits that it has taken thus far but as luck would have it, by striking so close to the edges, the 'glass' couldn't flex, hence the star.

And the cost...$1305, regionally available from BMW only.

There are 4 pieces in my region and an additional 12 in the 2 surrounding regions. Typical shipment time is 2 days. Ordered today.

I will post pics later.

I have already called a company and the cost is about $300USD for the windshield. My next mod.

Insurance does not cover windshield? In FL it does. No deductible.

HUD compatible windshield is not significantly more expensive than normal OEM model. Mine was replaced a year ago. No problems after that.

If it's any consolation, my CL63 AMG OEM replacement windshield with night vision (before installation) was more than double the cost of the i8's.

Thanks?
It's fine. The windshield replacements just get to be a bit old.

My windshield just cracked. BMW dealer told me that they should do the replacement because it requires a special tool in order to not bend the carbon fiber frame. 2 days to replace and $2800. Ouch. This seem correct?

This is excessive. Go to a different dealer.

The windshield is appx $1300.00 with my 15% discount. That would leave about $1500.00 for labor or appx 10 hrs.

No Way.
