Financing vs Leasing (with new residual) of i8
These general topics are touched on, but not sure if the age old question has been addressed with the updated residual.
In short, the new 2 year (10K miles) lease residual is 63% (I think). Which on an MSRP of around 140K (2015 model) would end up with a value of 88,200 after 2 years and fairly low miles (figure 12-18K). From those that have been owners or have been watching things develop, does that seem a bit conservative? Because if they are being conservative (like they often are on the M3/M4s) then it would be better to finance and trade the car in (creates a lower effective monthly cost of ownership). Any thoughts from the group on what the trade-in values will be 2 years down the road would be greatly appreciated! |

On the other hand, BMW is famous for subsidizing its lessees. So if BMW is going to do so, you should take advantage of it. I almost bought my car for cash (in November 2014). At the last minute I decided to lease (from BMW Financial Services). I'm glad I did.

Leased mine 8 months ago. At the time there was still a bit of a wait for these cars and I almost ended up buying one that was at a dealership where a customer had backed out just so I didn't have to wait on my build. Had I done that I would have shot myself in the foot at the time. I ended up waiting on my car to come in and leased it for a half decent lease rate. Now the rates are even better. I'm now a firm believer of leasing anything that's not an ultra rare exotic, and by that I mean GT3 RS and the like. I lost so much money on my last 2 M6s, which I purchased for straight cash on the spot, that I feel like a sucker for not getting into leasing earlier. I just visited my closest BMW dealership and they have 9 i8s that I counted, mostly 16s with low cost "worlds" and laser lights. That much supply will surely hurt resale value. And it's the same throughout the high end sports car market overall. Heck look at Huracans. My local Lamborghini dealership quoted me $289,000 for my desired build on the night of the unveiling. Now they're sitting on 25+ and a similar spec was given to my friend for $55k off sticker on an open ended lease.

So far I've financed two M3s (2010 and 2015) and have made out really well on both of them. But that might have been unique to the M3 or me getting lucky (2010 was the last 4 door V8 and 2015 was the first 4 door V6) and now I am spoiled.
I'd pay like 90K for a gently used i8 in a heartbeat now. However, I can't find anything used for under 108, and even then there are only a few cars in that price range. Maybe I am looking the wrong places, but tried autotrader and ebay, etc. But I think everyone is saying that won't be true of the future when all of the 2 and 3 year old ones come off leases. Once I get to 108 used, I'm only 10K off the price of a brand new 2015 (for the few that are left), so makes that look a little less attractive. |

I think the residual numbers of leases they are using now are about:
$93,000 for a 2 year old i8 with less than 20k miles $85,000 for a 3 year old i8 with less than 30k miles Does that seem totally out of whack? I know there is just no history to look at. Cheapest used one I've seen is 108, but things will obviously be different 2 years from now. |

Just leased a '15. 24mos/10k residual is 67%. 12k is 66%, 15k is 64%.
We leased 24m/12k because with ongoing range improvement/battery development, I doubt the car will be worth 66% MSRP at trade in 2 years. We chose the 15 because of added incentives. Find a dealer with 15s in stock and tell him to sharpen his pencil! |
