Trunk pivot cracked

So my bad luck with this car continues (3 months in - 2 punctured tires, broken side view mirror).

Today my trunk wouldn't latch closed, and when I took a closer look, I saw the cracked pivot.

Quick online search, I see this is an issue, with a little wear and tear. I've only got 3,500 miles and 3 months ownership.
I also see that fixing/replacing is pretty easy and very cheap. Great!

The other concern, is why did it crack?
I noticed from when I got the car, that the trunk was a little awkward closing, especially compared with my previous i8.
I'm concerned that the latching mechanism might need a little adjustment, and needs to be a little closer together? I feel that I've had to push a little harder to close the trunk on this i8, and that has caused the pivot to crack prematurely?

Your theory seems sound, it looks like the pivot isn't lining up quite straight, putting undue stress on it and causing it to fracture. Good luck tweaking it and fortunate that they're not expensive parts!

I had the same problem. Dealer replaced the part.

I wonder if a felted pad to where that pivot comes in contact with the body would dampen the strike stress on it to prevent future fracture?

I'm just going to order the parts and install myself - cheap parts and looks pretty basic to install.

I might try and move the latch myself over the weekend to make latching the trunk a little easier.

Do most people let the trunk fall a few inches to latch, or gently rest it then push close?

I like the idea of a felt pad, I might try that as well!

I always rest the trunk and push to close then, the thought of letting it fall down didn't cross my mind.

I do the same. I read somewhere about lowering it and then dropping it.

Thanks for the Pat's video link. I did see the video, that's where I got all the info about the parts and replacement.
Pat's always a great source of valuable info!
Wonder if he has any info on adjusting the actual latch....? :-)

That is what I did. Even a piece of duct tape will do the job.

Luckily mines all under warranty-but bizarrely this is what one dealership is charging the other??

Bought the car approved used 2 weeks ago, from a dealership 200 miles away. Dealership is paying my local BMW centre that rather than asking them to claim on warranty, I don't entirely get it!
