'Little' solution to tackle the doors issue

Just wanted to share with you a little solution I'm using to tackle the issue of the i8 butterfly doors hitting other cars or the wall in tight parking spaces.

I am carrying around this small piece of foam with a slit at the bottom (came out of my son's swimming board) in the glove compartment. Each time I suspect that the door might hit something I slide it underneath the door. This prevents any scratching and allows me to maneuver myself in or out of the car without having to stay holding the door.

Pics here below...

That's pretty cool to carry with you.

Very clever idea. You even matched the BMW I color scheme.

You need minimum 55cm space to securely open the doors .I conducted a test myself too . Your solution is very clever too .
Thanks for sharing

Thanks for that. I've been wondering about doing something similar.
Door clearance is something I'm a bit concerned about (and I haven't even picked my i8 up yet!)

My solution, don't open the door without enough space. I have a Roadster, so I can get in and out without opening the door if need be. But never needed that. In a situation that tight I wouldn't worry about me carefully opening my door and damaging the other car. I would bet that the other way round is the problem usually and just not park there. You will find damage on your car guaranteed soon. Most people don't care about others property.

But what about the guy parked next to you when he opens his door into the side of your car?
You get a nice big door ding.
Your crazy to park that close to another vehicle.

It would be useful if BMW programmed the proximity sensors to indicate side door distance.

I guess they don't want responsibility for them indicating you have enough space when you don't. This is not unlikely, my door usually would be limited by another cars mirror more than the distance to it the sensors see. Those things are much more complex than they look on first glance. That's why we also won't see L5 autonomous cars for unlimited ODDs anytime soon.
