windshield / windscreen stress cracks?

Love my i8 but recently I woke to find the windshield cracked. I cannot remember any impacts and none were evident. The crack starts in the middle above the rear view mirror and radiates downwards for 9 inches and then across both sides for 12 inches. Looks like a stress crack to me. BMW say they have never heard of anything like that occurring and its going to cost me a lot to get them to repair.

Has anyone else had this happen or heard of this happening?

I managed to break a screen once by using super glue to stick mirror back on. Apparently it stresses the glass.. Not an i8 . Just a thought..

Clearplex

MY i8 is coming in 6 weeks.

First job is to get Clearplex installed to protect the windscreen.

I saw them on Jay Lenos Garage and they have a UK distributor. A few guys on this forum have discussed this in the US.

They travel to you and fit for £250+VAT

I have had exactly the same occur to mine yesterday! I took it to the dealers today for them to register for a warranty repair. I'm now awaiting their response. Sounds like it's in the same place - will upload a picture shortly.

For those that have clearplex installed on their windshield, does it reduce the clarity at all? Any differences at night vs day? Also I'm located in Sacramento, CA, anyone know of a shop that does the installation as I cannot find one near me.

Contemplating installing the windshield protection film as well. I just found this Bay Area installer through the Clearplex site: http://eliteautofilms.com

I thought gorilla glass was only for rear window.

Gorilla Glass is only used in the panel between the interior and the engine compartment.

Pretty terrible service from BMW so far on the cracked windscreen. They forgot to order it from Germany despite having 2 weeks notice. Now Germany say there are no windscreens available for the foreseeable future! Been over 6 weeks in total now. They still don't have a view on what caused the breakage. Dread to think what the situation would be like if there was a major electrical or mechanical problem. So have decided to move the car on if and when they ever get round to fixing it. Shame as I really enjoyed it in the brief time I had it but need something less bespoke or at least with a better supply situation. Porsche I expect...

So picked the car up today. BMW refuse to accept that it may have just cracked due to stress etc. Charged me $1800 after deducting $450 for the long wait etc. The car was dirty inside (bits of trim etc from where they had cut out the old screen) but I just wanted to go home so did not make a fuss. Enjoyed my trip back home - thought I'd keep the car. Then found I could not get out without the drivers door catching on and lifting the external trim over the A pillar. I managed to squeeze out without damaging the trim. These guys (Vines BMW, Guildford) are complete muppets. If they can't look after these cars they should not sell them. I have an M2 on order through another dealer (Cooper Cobham, who I usually use and who are very good - sadly not an i dealer) so will switch to that when my order comes in in the autumn. In the meantime I have a road trip to Amsterdam this week so will see how the car does on such a long journey (round trip 1500 miles?).

Just as by way of an update, my dealer has replaced the windscreen (under warranty) and done a great job - you wouldn't know they'd been in the car except for the fact that the screen is no longer cracked. Had an i3 loaner for the day too and thought that was great - just can't understand why BMW didn't fit adaptive cruise or enable wing mirror drop on selecting reverse on the i8?!

Passenger wing mirror drop is present on UK i8s. You just have to have the mirror selector slider switch set to drivers side mirror. When you go into reverse, the passenger mirror will tilt downwards.
