Again, just merge the new, clear, light, modern, 2D logo which lacks character with the old, charismatic, immediately identifiable logo, to create the perfect combo for a fresh start, one single logo to be used consistently across all brand communication and on the actual vehicles (alternatively, with silver surround and lettering instead of white on the actual cars).

Sure it was. People upset about a logo that was supposed to appear on new cars, when in fact, it was for other purposes i.e. corporate logo on sites, header logo on paper etc...in any event, old news.
