I test drove the Taycan Turbo S last year. Overall unimpressed, although it did have a lot of very positive points.

Negatives were the cheap interior quality (for the price), and its sheer mass. It felt so ponderous and heavy.

I also drove a Model 3 Performance. I was pleasantly surprised, but the build quality remains awful, and the interior quality feels cheap even though it looks good in pictures. Worst was that it really could not cope with being driven at 10/10ths. Suspension started thumping so badly I initially thought I broke it. Very good for the price though.

I wouldn't replace i8 for either. i8 has 2 big flaws too of course. The worst being it is under-tyred and under-braked. Second is the complete absence of steering feel.

If BMW doesn't make an i8 successor (still praying for that), I'm considering to purchase the car at lease end.

I can't see them making it.

They will be too busy dealing with the sales disaster they have created by virtue of their marketing and design departments

I agree that the i8 does stand out in contrast to the Porsche Taycan Turbo S in certain respects (lightweight and lower sports car stance).

Perhaps the Taycan you test drove was, for the price, outfitted with a cheap standard interior finish. The Taycan Turbo I took delivery on has a more luxurious interior finish in contrast to my i8. Unfortunately, the matt carbon and neodyme accents, upgraded leather, and contrast stitching options throughout the cabin came at an exorbitant price, a notorious way in which Porsche is able to squeeze more $$$ from its customers.

The Taycan Turbo is an absurdly fast four-door GT for me and is my main daily drive. I'm quite pleased with how the performance package and rear-wheel steering are able to magically transform the 2.5-ton Taycan Turbo into a nimble sports sedan. However, when it comes to spirited driving, the i8 key fob is the first one I grab.

JasH, hope you're taking full advantage of tracking your McLaren during this challenging time. Shelter in place, here in California, would be driving me nuts if not for the every now and then spirited driving.

Talking about the Taycan ... Porsche produced over 20.000 units in the first year. Roughly the same number as all i8 being produced in total.

Than have a look at the absurd plastic passenger front cupholder

I agree in general but the devil is in the detail. Had a 911 4s, 911 Turbo, Taycan and a 911 convertible in the last weeks (the wife in the market for a new car). As well as the new 8 series convertible. Every (new) Porsche had a rattle somewhere in the dash. The BMW was without a doubt better made although kind of "old" looking. And the engine was very different Turbo vs. BMW with the BMW having a much more god like straight line acceleration feel. I agree anytime the first corner changes that, especially with the brilliant rear-wheel steering.

None of those cars compares to my real lifetime 0,9 L. / 100km i8. They are just so different. Most likely the wife will not buy any of them but an Aquila 211 for much less

I have struggled to come up with the replacement and I bought it outright in 2014 .... no markup luckily. So I am continuing to own and drive it, have put fatter rims and tires on it. I am going into a different direction, M2 CS!?!

It was a top spec fully loaded dealer demo car, but never mind.

Sadly every track day I had booked in 2020 was cancelled thanks to Covid, so the McLaren got little real use.

Not an alternative to i8, but I'm planning to test drive the GR Yaris. If it lives up to the hype, I might well replace the i3 with it.

I've been trying to get my wife to test drive the GR Yaris to replace her Abarth 595 Comp, but she won't have it!

I've driven it now. Mostly lives up to the hype, but be aware it is not at all exciting to drive even at 9/10ths. It only comes alive at 10/10ths. Really unusual for a road car.

I was in pouring rain in 6C ambient, and it was hard to unstick it with the throttle. But I did get the rear out a number of times by really provoking it, or using the handbrake. It was very quick to rotate when I did that, but was also super easy to catch.

Nothing, and I mean no supercar, will keep up with it in the wet on a narrow twisty country road. But otherwise it was not really all that quick, so in the dry, or a wider road, or on even a short straight, any more powerful car will leave it behind.

I will drive it again, then decide.

My real issue is my wife refuses to drive a manual car now

This would be a nice option. Nico Rossberg drives the new Rimac.

I didn't buy the GR Yaris, but bought this instead:

Quick video of me at an event.

Longer video, Day 1 when I collected it:

Additional car though, as I kept my i8

I still have my i8 after 7 years and I am finally starting to tire of it. It is an awesome car, but I just don't find much excitement in it anymore. If my kids didn't love it so much, it would have been gone a couple of years ago. I just passed 15k miles.

Who are you 😂

I am at exactly the same point, same mileage and ownership with the same kids apparently. I was about to trade it in for a M3 and they were like that car is just ok It is however interesting to me that the car does create quite a cult following with high schoolers I found out. In addition, people still walk up to me and ask me about the make and model. Kind of like "Stranger Things"….

FYI, trade in value was about 65K in my case. With 911s starting to sit on the lots a bit more I may try that route instead.

I traded my 2015 i8 with 26,000 miles for a CPO 2020 M550i. First time I went to a dealer, got a newer car and left with a check in my pocket. The difference paid for a Carbahn tune to get 700hp and some carbon fiber goodies from RW carbon that's on the way. I started hearing a clicking noise from the front axle on the i8 and owning it out of warranty was a risk I did not want to assume given it's just a fun weekend car for me. I thought I did well on the trade given used car prices are falling from the high of last year. The complexity of the i8 makes it a risky car to own out of warranty. I'll miss the i8 but my other fun car is a 2020 M2 Comp.

I've thought about a 911 as I used to drive Porsches before married life and kids. Not sure what I am going to get, but I have an i7 in production and an X7 M60i headed to me. I should be driving it by the end of the week. It is on a transport headed from AZ to my home in GA and I've been tracking it on Lojack all day.

Have you driven the NSX. The other issue is if you are on the gas for more than a few min like track etc. You feel it slow as its VERY tiny 1.3Kwh battery is drained. Hence why its not a plug in hybrid. Very poor mpg compared to the i8...
