I had a couple of cars back in the day that had Mallory dual points ignitions. Those were a PITA.

In the late 80's, I built an optical set of points - used a one piece optical source/detector and built the chopper disk from the end piece of a roll of solder. I had a 1000cc Suzuki SJ410 (smaller engine version of the Jimmy I think they sold here) idling smoothly at 600 RPM.

Bonus points (no pun intended) if you can explain what that electrical connector in the foreground of the picture connects to and why....

It connects to the condenser which stores a charge in order to deliver the spark as I recall, but it's been a very long time.

Winner!!!

The condenser provides an "easier" path for the electricity to flow in as the points pull apart. Prevents a spark arcing across the contacts and eroding them.

Phew....I was worried I was going to completely get it wrong. Funny how you question yourself on things you know but haven't had to think about for a while.

I kind of miss the days when an afternoon changing plugs and cleaning/setting points would add noticeable power and driveability (or swapping in $500 worth of headers/carb/manifold would almost double output). Then I realize that I'm now driving a car with tech that only the race teams had back then, with >125hp/liter, so it's a pretty cool trade off to let the computer fire the coils.

Yeah, you're so correct.

They are tuned to run optimally under nearly all conditions. The strangest thing I've noticed is that the M6 runs so much better after a fresh oil change and I only go 3-4K miles between oil changes on this new engine vs the original engine.

One of these in your glovebox would keep you off the side of the road. Only thing Blue-Point made that was any good. Their points certainly weren't.

Okay...

I remember the cassette tapes (I was born in 1990), and I know what ignition points are from working on a lot of older engines.

But what the heck are those?
