BMW Level 2 Charger Installed!
Just had the BMW level 2 charger installed! Electrician had to work miracles to fish a wire from my basement panel to the garage. I'll update this thread after seeing how much quicker this unit charges vs. the current all night routine with level 1. Biggest surprise is how far the cable reaches, I can stretch the cord across my entire garage and charge the I8 in position #3! Opens up possibilities for another EV in position #2 (Tesla, I3, others?)...

I charge from a regular household socket from empty to full in 2.5h. It is possible to set in the menu how fast it should charge and I have it at the highest setting, perhaps that is not possible in the US?

We’re 240v in the UK and get a full charge from a standard wall socket in about 2.5 hours too.

Thanks! Wife drives the X5 diesel, my daily was the frozen blue M6 convertible until I got the I8. Now rotating daily between these two cars. I also have a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro that I use on weekends.
It was 70 degrees and sunny today in Atlanta, driving the M6 with the top down was really nice!! |

Same here. Having played around with a heavy-duty mobile charger on a variety of outlets - all the way to 400V 32A - I noticed that 240/220V 16A is all the car can take. You can hook it up to more powerful outlets, but it won’t charge any faster than 2 hours. Seems like BMW gave it a rather mild charge controller to go with the small battery size.

No way I would leave nice cars out in the weather if I had an available garage bay. Good luck! Last edited by GATRD; 02-25-2018 at 07:03 PM.. Reason: added "was" |

I'm even tempted to set mine to the slowest charge in the menu for longevity...
