Creepy Audible Pedestrian Protection

Hi all,

Just a gripe really - this sound was quite the surprise when we took delivery of our 2020. It's louder than an ICE and so strange sounding that pedestrians turn to see what's making the noise. Furthermore my 7 year old characterizes the sound as creepy and embarrassing. I know BMW puts a lot of thought into designing sounds for their cars but I'm wondering if they did a focus group for this one.

I know it can be coded to be off but given all the pedestrians with their noses in their smartphones it makes sense to just leave it on and get used to it If only there were another sound or two to choose from.

I've been saying that BMW has been missing a huge monetization opportunity here. They could set up a marketplace to sell custom sounds, like cell phone companies used to sell back in the day. I'd buy a whole bunch of them, from Formula 1 car at full chat to a lumpy Harley Davidson idle. Bet they'd make more money off of this than CarPlay and navigation map update subscriptions.....

I picked up our second i3 a couple of weeks ago. And it sounded like the Renault Zoe, like a spaceship.
My misses though is was something wrong with it and brought to our SA.
With a technician they found it to be the new sound which EU law, stated that EV from 2020 needs to have a sound for pedestrians.
So that is what it is, i asked for it to be removed, but it was not possible.
In fact, when older EV was going in for service, they also recieved the new SW with the sound as well. I really want this to be coded away ASAP!!!

I'm sure it can be coded off (or you could unplug the exterior speaker making the sound).

I get that this is for pedestrian protection and much needed these days since everyone is on their phone and have something in their ears but this is the stupidest law ever!!!

Also, is this a law in US too? If not why would cars sold in US have to comply? Can't they update the SW at the port and remove the junk noise?

I thought they got Hans Zimmer to do it?

Is it the same noise as on the page here? https://www.bmwgroup.com/en/NEXTGen/iconic_sounds.html
