Another newby charging question: 2 types of fast chargers

Anyone know why there are 2 different types of fast chargers (or more?)? I think the i3 can only use 1 type.

Is this like a VHS and Beta thing? where eventually 1 will win out and the other will collect dust?

It can use all 3 levels

Level 1 (110). Level 2 (240). Dc fast charge

No risk of blue ray vs HD DVD

For DC fast charging there is Chademo (mostly Japanese brands and Tesla with an adapter) and Combo (European and American brands). The two types don't mix, so yes, it is VHS and Beta right now. Lots of DC fast chargers have one of each, but you are out of luck for fast charging if you don't find the right connector.

And I'm sure their would be an adapter either way so I wouldn't worry. The level 3 isn't even around the Midwest for me anyway so it isn't even a concern in my mind.

The CCS port is a more elegant and more efficient design compared to CHAdeMO.

There are CCS stations in cities across the Midwest. In fact, there's a BMWNA DC Combo station about 20 miles from Wheaton, in Schaumburg. See http://api.plugshare.com/view/location/39203.

plugshare.com is an asset for EV drivers.

Good News on DC chargers in Europe - BMW & Nissan have agreed a combined spec and they are all going to be made "combined" - and also another 500 fitted accross Europe...

Don't think any new cars are Chademo anymore, in the USA.
