My trunk won't open?

Anyone had this problem? Hitting the trunk button just nets a click from the mechanism but the rear glass doesn't open? Is there a way to this manually? My work bag is in there...

Nothing about it in my driver's manual. Try to open from the key. Also, make sure you're not opening the gas filler door!

There's an emergency release for the doors. I think there SHOULD be something similar for the trunk somewhere. But if MalibuBimmer couldn't find any reference of it in the manual then maybe it was just a huge oversight by BMW.

Happened three or four times when I had mine. I would have to jump, spin a 180, and land sitting on the hatch with my full weight. Then it would release normally.

The emergency release for the trunk is, unfortunately, in the trunk. Apparently for trapped midgets.

Same thing happened to me. I just pushed down with alot of force and magically after the 50th try and numerous hours it opened. BMW said they would need to take the rear hatch off if it didn't eventually open. As mentioned above the emergency release is in the trunk. Seems quite like an useless emergency feature imo.

I let it charge overnight. Came out this am and pushed the button on the key and it worked the first time. Must have had something to do with the charge level???

Did it again. Grrrr. Car was down to one mile of charge left. That seems to be the issue. That's pretty shitty design. It's charging now and up to 8 miles of range but still won't open. And yes I have groceries in the trunk. Again. BMW needs to fix this. Who makes a car that has no way to open a trunk???

Full charge this am and it STILL won't open. I sent BMW a pretty harsh email last night telling them this needs to be recalled and a manual latch (accessible from interior) needs to be installed at once. I can't arrive at the airport and not be able to get my luggage out. My better half can't arrive at the hospital she works at and not have her tools with her. Crazy...who designs a vehicle with no manual override process???

Happened to me twice.

Driving the car fixed it. I think the body flex is making the glass bind, and the popper can't lift the glass when the latch is released.

Sorry to hear man. Regardless of the reason, it needs to be recalled to put in a manual release. The design is flawed period.

Happening to me now. With the added torment of my i8 telling me the trunk is open! Sealed tight.

Happened 2 or 3 times with mine. Seriously, pushing down real hard on the glass while someone hits the open trunk button works. It's a problem with the fact that the car won't even activate the trunk release if it detects that it is open like old BMW's would. i.e. even if my E39 trunk is barely open the trunk latch will still "click open" if you press the button.

I'm afraid to push too hard and break the glass. I nhave tried by pushing but there is no "give." It's already locked tight.

It happened parked at a gas pump I was in the process of using and i HAD to get in the "trunk". I literally jumped, spun a 180, and came down on the edge of the glass while simultaneously hitting the trunk release to get it to open. Took 3 times, timed it right on the third. The i8 brings enough attention on its own, I can't imagine what this looked like from inside the gas station. Upon inspection it looked like the pressure sensors that detect whether the lid is closed can compress in a way that they don't fully make contact. I sold the car before I had the chance to have the dealer look into it.

I got an appointment for the i8 today. The car has been wonderful but the electronics causes all kinds of strange problems. There was the saga I wrote about of the charger plug that wouldn't come out until the car was lifted to be towed. That led to a two week shop visit that included changing some controller embedded in front of the batteries. (That was on the charger that came with the car. I also got a new charger but I've been afraid to use it. I use the wall model.)

At some point the car will exceed 30 days in the shop. And with very low mileage ( 8400). And if that happens, I'm going to lemon it.

Are you within the statute of limitations? If not, how does one get around that provision?
