That's a scrumptious cool car , coupe version is already a real head turner I think this will get people heads to turn even sharper

I wouldn't dream of an i8 besting a 911 turbo in performance, let alone an R8. I'm only pointing out the potential that I believe it can have with generating more sales.
I completely agree with you as all other BMW series cars offer different levels of "performance". The i8 is so new however it's just not there in it's lifecycle yet...and may never get there in this form. The i8 may simply be a mechanism to display advanced technology for now and then go away. Reason I say this is not because I know anything about what is going on inside BMW...but I cannot see this car in current form ever carrying forward long term. The compromises regarding access, storage and visibility make it a non-starter for virtually everyone (sales have essentially stopped). So again I don't think more power at a higher price point is going to help much with sales now.

I hear the yearning. But this will never be under the i brand for obvious reasons. Therefore, it can't look like an i car, either. Nor would it make sense to have it use the same platform. So, it would have to be a completely different car altogether.

Exciting to see them testing an actual prototype. It was looking iffy there for a while when the i8 Coupe first came out...

Updated 2/28/17: We recently got our first look at the BMW i8 Spyder with its top down. We now have the first look of the removable soft top in place. The driver flag on the side of the car also indicates that the prototype is being driven by BMW race car driver (and DTM champ) Marco Whitmann.

I hope this is a prototype, and the production vehicle will have a retractable hardtop like the McLaren.

I am hoping for a two-piece manual removable hard top, possibly choice of transparent or body paint color w reinforced CF, slides behind front seats, has some structural function.

But I am wedded to the coupe w its rear seats.

Looks like a perfect car for a targa top.

And actually looking at the photos of the car .. that cloth has to be camo attempting at hiding a single piece hard targa top.

Soft top? Last time I saw a soft top targa roof was on the Murcielago Roadster and it ruined an otherwise beautiful car.

Porsche has done something similar with their new 911 targa. It's been implemented more tastefully than the Murcielago but still ruins the car for me.

As for the i8 I'm hoping it's a CF top covered in fabric to keep us guessing.

I'm not arguing against you, and I definitely welcome more power/torque with open arms. But did you know that this 3 cylinder hybrid can still beat a V8 R8 on a straight drag race?

And it's off the line quicker than the GTR:

Not sure if this is a stock i8, but it wins drag races with other fast cars:

Manhart i8 is stock, only aero mods. A few months later the flash tune came out for it through a couple of different tuners such as Gintani, which I have. Adds about 40hp supposedly, never dyno'd to confirm but coming from an M4 it feels about as fast, I just miss the higher RPM sounds and exhaust.

I did take it to famoso speedway before the tune however and ran consistent 12.3's with launch control, 12.4 launching on my own

The Manhart car is by NO means stock, it's tuned and it was one of the first ones. And your hp numbers are off as well with a tune the car has 42xhp and 51xtq it's capable of 3.8 sec from 0-60.

http://www.manhart-performance.de/modelle/mhi8/mhi8/

^That is the exact car on Manhart's official website is it not? It says 362ps. And you're telling me my hp numbers are off because I said 40hp and you're correcting me saying it's 42hp? Lol

And actually Gintani, which is the tune I have claims 60hp and 100tq. Whether it's true or not I'll never know since I didn't do a before and after dyno, but hopefully on the 11th of this month I'll head to famoso and my time slips reflect better times with the tune. You can verify their claim here:
