i3 Transmission / motor noise

i3 39 months old and 42000 miles

Just developed a noise much like a noisy alternator on a normal car frequency in tune with vehicle speed

Anyone else experienced this ?

Help from i3 Owner in Plymouth GB area

BMW are advising me that the engine/transmission noise from my i3 is normal and are not interested in taking it further

Before I could hear the REX and the Pedestrian sound now its dwarfed by this new noise

Perhaps an owner driving in my car and me hearing theirs would reassure me that I'm not hearing things !

Sounds like a bearing has gone.

I have some tires on our Mini (Bridgestone RFTs) that started to howl after about 20k Kms of use. It was so loud on the highways at cruising speeds that it would overpower the stereo. Changed them out with some Pirellis and all is good now.

It's getting worse - they can't ignore it now.

Noisy right down to a stop

Resolved

New motor fitted - bit pricey £3800 and out of warranty

Fortunately BMW coughed up all but £250

Rather disappointing I would have expected the electric motor to outlast the car

Motor is pretty big about a 12" long and 15" diameter

Thanks for the data point on electric motor longevity (not great).

GBP £3,800 / USD $4,950 hardware quote seams a bit steep, unless in includes labor as well.
Motors themselves can be sourced for closer to $3,400 around here:

Ian - mine is doing this and my CPO warranty runs out tomorrow... What was their diagnosis... what terms/words can I use to give them direction? My local dealership ALWAYS assumes "it's normal" first... no matter what "it" is, until I push them to seriously take a look at it.

My 2018 BEV also doing this. I have it booked in for a service next week. Expecting either 'this is normal' or 'you need a new motor'.
