First dealer visit 12v battery and software update
I’ve finally scheduled my first visit in 4 1/2 years of i8 ownership to my local BMW dealership. Something I’ve tried to avoid partly because it’s 1 1/2 hours away and I just prefer maintaining my cars myself.
I’ve scheduled a replacement of the original 12v battery because no one will sell and ship me one and there is really no aftermarket replacement that I’ve been able to find. I’ll just suck it up and let the dealer have their way with me and let them register it too. My main question for the group is…that I’m considering letting the dealer do the vehicle software update from the original 2015 version to whatever the current version is. I’d like to know if anyone has had issues with the vehicle after the update or if they have noticed anything different in the vehicle performance, drivability, or reliability (less CEL and drive issue warnings) Thanks |

I have a 2014 always dealer maintained. They did some software upgrades in the past and I cannot tell the difference. If they find fault codes they may be able to do the update for less $$$, don’t expect it to be free since out of warranty…..

On my 2019 they continuously have updated the software (without mentioning it me). I've noticed some minor things like auto-handbrake on park etc...
The one issue I became aware of was that at some BMW started to encrypt or lock their ECU and if you wanted to tune your car it becomes much more complicated. |

The labor to install the battery and register it plus update the software on the car to the latest version was $180. Kind of expensive but typical BMW prices. So far a little over 2 years since my original post at the top of this thread, the car has been perfect. No CEL codes or drivability issues. Last edited by Coastali8; 11-15-2023 at 10:27 PM.. |
