Warranty against battery degradation

I've been looking around for details about what BMW would offer in terms of warranty for battery degradation but can't seem to find anything specific. I do plan on asking my dealer to get me this information if they can once I place my reservation (probably in the next couple of weeks).

I understand that some battery degradation is normal. But at what point does it become abnormal and would warrant a repair/replacement? 5%? 10%? 13.7%?

The way I see it there are 3 things that I as an owner would possibly experience as the battery degrades.
- Useable capacity of the battery in kWh may drop
- Charging speeds may be slowed down for a given state of charge and battery temperature
- The max amount of power the motors can pull from the battery pack may go down

Does anyone already have details/links as to if/how these measures are guaranteed by BMW?

Not sure it helps you, but can say what Porsche does on Taycan: 30% max degradation over 8 years or battery will be replaced. Battery on Taycan is about 50000 EUR to replace FYI. Also Porsche can sell warranty up to 15 years. I dont think BMW does this, so may be same will be on battery, same - but less.

Warranties vary by country and sometimes within countries. I have seen the 30% referenced but never in any official BMW documentation.

BMW claims that it can/will replace bad cells with good ones rather than the entire battery pack. But, when I reported a problem with my 2018 530e battery pack and they tested it, they found a bad cell but their solution was to replace the entire battery pack (of course, I am not complaining). Of course, on a BEV instead of a PHEV, there are a lot more cells so BMW would likely try to replace just the bad cells.

I do find it disingenuous of BMW not to specify it in the warranty book.

Thanks for the info! Even if it isn't for BMWs, it gives me an idea of what to expect from BMW.

In a different post, either here on in the other forum, a poster asked the BMW Genius line and was told 70% which is consistent with Porsche and probably correct. But I would still feel more comfortable if it were in writing.

Cool, thanks for the info. I am not thrilled with the idea of the battery degrading that much before it is worthy of a warranty repair/replacement. But I guess if I am unhappy after 3 or 4 years, I can just trade it in and get something else and it will no longer be my problem.

The 70% thing is written down on the BMW's website https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/all-...ures-and-specs

Im in EU, so I think here German car markers will have smth they agree on.

I think there is a desire to make good quality sustainable batteries (like sourcing cobalt in europe). Technology keeps improving and you want to have extended warranty...

I was also told some Taycans had electric gremlins and couple had batteries replaced when they first came (by dealer), and the replacement batteries were right away like 50km more range. And Porsche told me that they are super chill on worries about batteries as warranty is very good and worth taking.

IX I think will be solid with its range and warranty. Would not even worry about it.

So 70% would be OK (hence technically and legally not covered)? That would be a reduction in range of about 100 miles. And if that happened within the first year, I'd be unhappy. Sounds like the industry standard though....
