BMW i8 sold for $247,450, including $100,000 market adjustment

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

Quote:
Rather than patiently waiting for his order, a BMW i8 buyer was willing to pay an extra $100,000 to get the car right away.

This shouldn't really come as a big surprise as back in August last year we heard some rumors about a few dealers jacking up the price of an i8 by as much as $100,000. It actually happened at BMW Irvine in Orange County, California where a $147,450 i8 was sold for $247,450 after the massive $100,000 markup (or "market adjustment").

Needless to say, the BMW i8 is in high demand as the company's sales & marketing boss Ian Robertson said a while ago there's an 18-month waiting list in some markets. As a consequence, BMW is seriously considering to boost production to keep up with a demand which they admit has far exceeded their original estimations.

Part of the reason why the demand is so high is because of the low production supply. I don't think the mark ups would be even close to $100k if the production numbers weren't so limited.

I heard from a BMW Sales Agent the customer actually paid $50K over MSRP not the $100K stated in the linked article.

It is hard to believe such a high markup when there are other options. But like ElMills has said if you have the means to get what you want NOW then why not?

Would 100% get a Ferrari 458 at that price. Wouldn't even be a comparison or second thought.

Very true, but if I already have the F 458 and the MCL 650s already and I have the means and I want the BMW i8 right now then what's another $100K? Can't argue with personal fulfillment when money isn't an object.

I'm going to guess that they probably already have 2 458's, and probably a crapload of other supercars if they are willing to pay a $100k markup for something that gets demolished by a Tesla S.

I was responding the the statemen I quotedt, not the article. I couldn't care less how much someone pays over sticker for their car.

I can only guess that if someone is willing to pay that extra amount instead of waiting and buy a 911 to befriend the car, that i8 is going to sleep with several masterpieces like ferrari enzos and such

When I turned in my lemon 650GC at New Century BMW, I saw a white i8. I was interested, but sales guy, a fat dude, was not willing to open the door to let me see it and said there is a $100k mark up. I spoke to a BMW NA rep at a BMW pop-up store in mall, and he said that i8 is in demand but most customers he knows didn't pay any mark up for it.

Someone who's got an extra $100k kicking around to pay a dealer markup just so he doesn't have to wait, isn't interested in what else he could get for that price (he probably has the other cars already). Nor does he care about what else has better performance. He wants this particular car NOW. I highly doubt this is going to be his daily driver or sit in his garage, next to the wife's Camry.

Plus this story could be totally bogus and an attempt by the dealer to create buzz
