The Tesla is a one trick pony.
I think this is spot on, the only thing I SLIGHTLY disagree with is this: there was a chance Tesla could have become a profitable company. And that would have been IF they had managed to make a 200 miles range version of the car at around $35-40K price range. Then the interior quality is in line with price, it would be a very useful first car for many and second car for most. It still has the great advantage of a quiet electric drive. But I am afraid the window for this is rapidly shrinking or almost shut, with german car makers offering plug-in hybrids and maybe even all electric versions of better quality cars.

I still hope Tesla can pull it off, they are a pioneer. I think the Tesla Roadster was a bold and good move.

Was that an 1/8 mile? The C63 and the GT3 are at a disadvantage on a short track like that. The i8 has AWD and instant torque.

This video has it running a 1/4 mile side by side with an M4 and a lot of other great cars. The i8 gets a jump on a lot of the cars, but the gaps close quickly over the 1/4 mile.

M4 12.2 sec @ 117.8 mph
i8 12.4 sec @ 112.1 mph

One thing about electric and plug in cars. They are fast on a full charge only. On longer tracks or for a second drag race they lose performance. The exception is cars with super capacitors that allow rapid recharging during braking on a circuit course.

This is only true on a full on continues straight line drag race. If you are talking about a track or an actual circuit where you accelerate and decelerate the engine will charge the battery. Not on the track but on rural empty roads whenever I am pushing the i8 not in a straight line I never seem to drop below 12-13 mile charge over time, which is how high the engine will charge the battery when not in full demand.

Short drag race is what's in question. i8 still beat M4. Actually, I'm just happy i8 keeps up with the M4. i8 isn't about drag race or time around a track. You just don't get it.

There is so much wrong here, even excluding the subjectivity.

Malarkey on many accounts.

I think you touched a very important point. I don't think BMW expected the i8 to get praise in so many categories. People forget what the point of the i8 and it is not supposed to be performance. It just happens to do well in the performance categories so that's why it has so many comparisons even when it is not supposed to be in them. This just hints at what an M version might look like even though it seems like that will never happen at this point.

Only what is disclosed in Tesla's public disclosures. Based on those, Tesla isn't going to make money for a long time.

If you haven't noticed Elon Musk is not stupid and doesn't do anything that doesn't make money. Rome wasn't built in a day sir.

Still 100% born electric and the true industry electric leader take a look, number one in EV sales sir.
