You know an X7 has none of those things, either, right? The iX does not need NACS and SC access to be an excellent road trip machine. I've done 3,000 miles roundtrip and it charged like a champ with only a 15 minute wait during that entire adventure. When not road tripping, there is zero issue because *everyone* with an EV needs to charge at home or where they live. Without that, there is little point in owning an EV if the primary reason is fuel savings.

Don't buy into the noise. Most of the BS isn't even valid.

Understandable to think that way. I spent 6 winters in Boston/Cambridge for school so I’m well aware of the range of winter temps/conditions there (with Killington/Maine/Montreal trips). You’re looking at 10F (negative F with wind chill) to 30s for most of the winter. I went to Wellesley a lot 😜 so I know you can’t really go that fast on Mass Pike.

The difference is that I’m doing winter road trips, specifically out from SoCal to Utah or Mammoth or Whistler/Banff/Jasper.

Canada is 0F-15F and at 55-70mph I’m getting 220ish.

It’s not just being in the cold. There’s wind, elevation, speed, radiant/blower heater use, etc. Speed limit on the 15 between St. George and Salt Lake range between 75-80mph? which means people are averaging 90–95mph. This kind of speed in 10F, uphill and against wind will net a 160-190 mile range especially on winter tires on any iX.

That is the reason why I leased mine coupled with the fact that leasing is the only way to get the tax credit. If technology changes fairly slowly I suspect valuations will approximate lease residual values in a few years. If technology breakthroughs occur, then resale may devalue more.

For those of us that drive to Tahoe vs Vermont. In addition to a 250 mile trip and 20 degree temps, add in 7200 feet of climbing and tell what your range is?

Why do you guys keep getting confused? Was comparing the model X and iX. The iX doesn’t have a 3rd row. The X does (optioned). The iX doesn’t have a fronk. The X does.

Separately I’m keeping the X7 for road trips because the gas cost is marginal and there’s a lot more room, more like the model X.

Of course I know the X7 doesn’t have a fronk.

The conversation history should clear things up - was comparing the Tesla Model X and iX. I’m not ready to get an iX until it has a 3rd row and more storage - a fronk is part of that solution. Oh, and SC.

Can I not compare the X and iX until I own an X? . And I don’t want an X so I’m sticking with my X7.

I have an ix and an x7 with dhp and I like the ix better in most aspects. The 3rd row of the x7 is superb with the premium pack. Much spacious than the model x's 3rd row. True that a 3rd row and the IX would be 100% perfect.

We had a Model Y before our iX. Never used the Fronk. It ended up being a gimmick. Yes, 3rd row on the Model X is a clear advantage, but the iX rides much better overall. We looked at both very closely. At the time the X also only came with the Yoke. But interior design of the iX is much nicer -IMHO.

I use the fronk every time I get smelly to go food for the family. Works brilliantly. Other use is dirty, wet shoes, groceries, and any time we need a little extra space.

I'd love to see a controlled study comparing efficiency at various temperatures and driving conditions to accurately compare this.

I'd also love to see batteries become smaller, standardized, and swappable (like AA batteries for personal devices). I bet something like this becomes more feasible with higher energy density batteries in the future.

Let's pretend these packs hold 10 kwh of charge. If you only need 100 miles of range to cover your daily commute, you only plug in 3-4 of these. If you need 600 miles of charge, maybe you plug in 20 of them. This way your efficiency is further improved by only lugging around as much battery as you actually need.

In my Model 3 I seldom used the frunk except for carry out pick up. A great way to avoid smelling up your car! That said…otherwise mostly unused. Wish the IX had one….but certainly not a deal breaker. Certainly would not want the compromises of the Model X to get a frunk.

Yeah. We switched to DoorDash for food delivery…other use cases, trunk seems to work well for us…

Grubhub for us most of the time, but there are places close by that don’t deliver. DoorDash has been really bad/unreliable here.

But the original use case was the model X to take our family on a road trip. We never seem to have enough room in our car for stuff and if it were a decision between the X and iX that is a real factor along with the 3rd row availability.

I used my frunk once in 9 years to store a NEMA 14-50 extension cord and a CHAdeMO adapter. In my case, it didn't live up to the hype.

I’ve had a trunk for 9 years now in my model s - only store chademo (not used for 6 years now…) and emergency extension cords that never have been used… I won’t miss it when I get my ix, but I will miss the cubby in the left side of the luggage compartment where I kept snow equipment etc readily available, seems that kind of storage is missing (don’t count the storage under the lid, as it’s not available if having the luggage full…).

It would be neat if they made a 50 mile battery pack that you could throw in your trunk and plug into the car (from the trunk) if you wanted to do a longer range drive. Not sure how much something like this would cost but it would help with some range anxiety for those who take longer road trips. They could standardize the battery pack and keep them at gas stations for rent.

An extra 50 miles is not going to solve anyone's range anxiety. With 300+ miles I don't understand how anyone can have range anxiety. How many miles does an EV's range need to be to drive the 37 miles per day that the average American drives? lol

It would probably weight around 200 lbs. and cost around $4K.
