iX honest opinion - reveal & test drive review. GET ONE!!!!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Wondering if you should get an iX. This will help I hope. I just finished the edit on the video if you want to watch it.

I was invited to a BMW UK Reveal thing and so I took my camera.

Firstly if you don't want an electric car this won't change your mind but if you do...OMFG.

The iX was so good, so quiet and so modern, that I immediately took out the X545e straight after to compare, and was shocked.

As a massive fan of the X5 - it suddenly felt 1. Noisey! 2. V Old fashioned! Other than the Model 3 (which looks a bit stupid) this is the ONLY EV I would consider (no... desire!).

Yes I need to do a full close up review and cover the ACTUAL usage of the battery, but I suspect someone here will have done that before me; that of course is probably the most important thing. But in short if you don't want to watch the vid (I get it, means you leave this site, so maybe don't watch it

Materials.

Better than a 7.

Seats.

Better than the X5 - soft, new leather, large seats, so comforting. Seating position, completely upright if you want it.

Steering

A massive highlight for me. Super silky, smooth light and luxurious. X5 steering with added YUM.

iDrive8

The videos on YT don't work. It looks terrible on YT. In the flesh it is incredible. The detail, colours, fonts, maps, speed and overall design is way better than iD7 (which I didn't like much) compared to iD6.

Noises

Official word from my contact is that road noise is mitigated over the X5 by:

Wheel design.
Foam specially designed tyres for this car and non run-flats!
Elastic steering mounting thing.
Special engine mounts to reduce noise and feeling.
Acoustic glass.

But unofficially - I also think that there is roof acoustic fabrics in the lining and door cards. Silently with the doors closed there is almost a "noise cancelling" effect present.

This car is probably 40-50% quieter on the move than the X5. Almost nothing audible at 30mph. No tests at 70mph yet.

The electric noises, are hardly audible. So are not to disturb or annoy. But naturally due to who made them, they sound very VERY good on start up and on the move.

Harmon is standard along with Driving Assistant Professional. It has 24 drivers, and sounds stronger than the X5. Cleaner high ends, warm bass. Again due to the size of the space, it does not sound as amazing as the new 5 series Harmon Kardon, but will not disappoint. A little warmer than the X5 Harmon. I also think the sound deadening, which they have not admitted, and the quality of the leather, cushioning and surfaces help a lot.

Appointment

This car doesn't just feel like a luxury car, it feels like the bridge of a starship the lighting along the bottom of the window is a lovely touch and the colours are tremendous and new. Rear seats are angled back to almost recline. Everything you touch is unusually high quality for them. Let's be honest, it's been going down a bit. Carpets in the flooring and rear trunk area are thick pile.

Wheel

Not tried the plaid wheel yet but boy is that steering wheel fat and gorgeous to operate. I miss it. I want it.

Overall

Oddly I don't want this cause its an electric car. I want it because its the nicest car I have driven this year period. It just happens to be electric. (not my favourite part but also my favourite part).

Here is the video not to watch Any questions drop me a note.

Congrats! The iX has me intrigued since day one. I think it is a design that will age very well. The only parts that I am hesitant about is that the ambient lighting seems slightly underwhelming in comparision to the X5.

If I may ask, what estimated delivery time have you been given? Or are you already picking it up next week…?

The spec of the iX in the showroom of your video is really nice, probably the nicest one I have seen to date. Which color is it? TB or PB?

It was actually already built when I ordered it in November so I couldn't change anything. It has most options. The only thing I wanted to change was the exterior color, blue ridge mountain.

I should have gotten the car already but they have a big impact of Covid in Bremerhaven so the car was parked there for almost 3 weeks waiting for transport to Sweden.

Test Drive

I had the iX for the day yesterday - Im coming from a GO5 which is 2.5 yrs old. Wow wow wow! The ride quality is fantastic and I was pleasantly surprised. This is my first EV test drive so don't have anything to compare against

Interior - it's not comparable to anything else! It's plush, solid and futuristic. As first it felt to minimalist but it grows on you quickly.

iDrive - love it very smooth and loads of new features. Eg augmented navigation which is neat.

Really considering changing the G05 but the price tag is 😬

Definitely recommend a test drive

I felt that the interior lighting was way way nicer than the X5 no offence.

The lights being under the window make a difference as it reflects a hue. It's hard to see in the video, had to do the whole thing on an iPhone due to time etc.

The aug is better than Mercedes Aug imo too.

Yes ASH - price !!!!! and UK electric prices..!!!! My home bill dual fuel is Ł238 a month! on my own.. BEFORE a car.

Thank you. My spec is 89k!! For the iX40

My energy bill is similar to yours! Energy prices are crazy but I roughly cal on what I'm spending fuel today vs going EV I think I can save between 30-40%.

You also need to consider the cost for the charging point. Have been looking into that over the last few days and considering Hypervolt. Plus if you have a firm order placed, you could claim back £350 from Sunak! - any recommendations welcome and installation in the West London region.

So the question is should I swap. Well the lead time is about 4-6month in delivery. With chip shortage, I'm am getting a decent price for the GO5 - it's a vgood spec but the PX price drops significantly. So considering getting rid of GO5 now via WeBuy (cant be bother with private sale) Bank the equity and take the plunge ….one to mull over Xmas

Ps - Beaver Teeth - these are growing on me

None taken
Just from the pictures and videos I have seen it looks pretty underwhelming in comparision to G05 and many other new cars. However I guess you have to experience it live and I would also guess that the designers went for a more toned down ambient lighting to fit more with the lounge or living room feeling they wanted to create. I mean how many of us have visible light strips everywhere in our living rooms running across panels and furniture? The lights are more hidden and subdued in general.

I guessed it was a pre-ordered car if you were to take delivery already. Congrats on what seems to be a great car and fully optioned no less I guess you went xDrive50? I think BRM will grow on you, also fun to have something different.

Does anyone know if air suspension is only an option for iX 50 or can you get it on iX 40?

In Sweden air suspension is not an option for the 40. But if I recall correctly in one review(autogefuhl?) it was mentioned that it would probably become an option later. Also remembering that the same review said that the 50 would have air suspension as standard only in the beginning.

This is how I recall that I’ve heard but please correct me if that is not true.

Don't mind the looks but now I have my first SUV (G05), I love the split tailgate and don't like this is missing from the iX. A consequence is the dumb light arrangement inside and the reduction in space as a result.

Mind you, I'm only 9 months into a 48 month PCP so not changing yet but keeping an eye on what BMW comes out with (plus also the new RRS due out in 2023).

I was under the impression it is air suspension all round as standard? Interesting!!!!!! i wonder if THAT is why I preferred this suspension.. if it was springs.

They didn't give me a spec sheet.

In relation to G05 swap out... I am not entirely sure unless you are loaded. The X5 still is a rare car on the road, its still a massive joy and they hold their value.

Granted this is the only EV I would have - but if I didn't need to change cause I already had a G05 then no way... The hassle of charging - the range is a worry if you are used to the G05. I mean its amazing machine ... but the energy crisis is a real proper concern!

Sure if you had access to a Tesla network great... but if your G05 is spec'd up nice. It's a beast. I cannot afford one. I am sticking with my G11 - I can't justify a 25k to change into a used one. And the chip shortage means who knows when a newy would be delivered.

For EV lovers and green people - the iX50 makes sense but it's the cost of a house. Relax keep the G05 until we know what is going on with energy prices.

Yeah! Don't know if it an option of iX40 only on the 50. I think I'd miss the smoother ride as my current G05 has air suspensions. Mind you, the iX is lower

Also no dealers offers as such nor is BMW offering anything. This car is so new with and the chip shortage, I can't see them offering anything for a while.

My current G05 spec is 👌🏽and agree it's a beast and still love the drive everyday! But I think the iX is as good habit driven it and the interior is AMAZING!

Great video. All positive comments about iX have plenty of merit. To me, iX is a transitional vehicle still trying to find its rightful place. X5 remains my favorite until solid state batteries become available.

Solid state batteries will transform EV market again once manufactured in production volumes.

The solid state thing? Do you have any words on that? Agree by the way but any evidence? We will still have the energy price thing. The energy companies keep me awake as it is.

It does feel a little like all of them are place holders. Whereas Elon feels more like an established thing. The whole automatic routing thing, the destination chargers.

I think for someone with a big country house or driveway, short runs, drives not that much, ex accountant the iX40 is such a cool "modern" space ship toy. In the US or Netherlands it will be interesting as they have so many chargers.

Not driven the Plaid yet but this is way better than the old Model X.. shocker that was.
