Cancelling after production starts?

Wondering if anyone has done this or know how it works. Say you get an allocation now, submit a build and it goes into production. Can you still cancel the car at some point after that? Do you lose any $ if you do so?

I know you can technically buy cancelled produced orders, so I’m guessing it’s possible. Just not sure on the mechanics of how the cancellation works and if you lose any $

The laws in your state will tell you if you will lose your deposit or not.

Agreed.

I'm assuming you are asking as you haven't placed an order yet? If the dealer even takes a deposit from you, then its up to your state's laws if the deposit is refundable.

In NJ, no matter what the dealership says, its fully refundable by law.

Same with California, deposit fully refundable. Exception would be companies like Tesla Motors that managed to make their $250 deposit non-refundable somehow.

Ultimately, regardless of state law, if you did the deposit with a Visa credit card for example you can dispute the charge and the dealership will have to produce documentation saying they sold you something and/or deposit was non-refundable. We have good consumer laws in the US regardless where you are.

It's hard to justify a non refundable deposit of $1000 or more for a product that you have no problems selling to someone else.

Good luck!

Thanks all. I have placed an order and my deposit is refundable. Just wasn’t sure how it worked once it went into production. But think I’ve got a good idea now (should be refundable until I take delivery)

If you pre-ordered in the US, the deposit should be fully refundable any time prior to delivery of the vehicle.

(scroll down on the right side where it says "$1,500 Pre-Order Deposit - Fully Refundable." Hover over the "?" and it says until delivery.

This only applies to the first round of preorders that were done on BMWusa.com website, the OP is talking about placing an order with a dealer and doing a dealer deposit.

That part isn't clear, which is why I stated "if you pre-ordered." The OP only states that he/she just received an allocation. Receiving an allocation just now doesn't mean the vehicle wasn't pre-ordered. I'm certain there are people that pre-ordered which still have not received an allocation.

When I ordered my iX, I had to sign a document stating that the deposit is fully refundable until production starts, then it becomes non refundable. The sales person basically said, some customers order a very unique config that we would have a tough time selling in case the buyer backs out. Think of a green car with a red interior for example.
