AMA: ask an owner anything about the iX

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I know how waiting for a car which you really haven't had much (if any) hands on time can lead to a lot of unanswered questions.

As I'm fortunate enough to be one of the earlier deliveries of the vehicle, I though I'd start a thread where folks can ask questions and I can try to provide answers which will help with purchasing decisions or just curiosity

So fire away!

My wife and I test drove one yesterday. I liked it because it’s an EV, the awesome tech, and how fun it was to drive.

My wife really only cares about “am I getting $100k worth of Luxury out of this car” and does this car justify the $100k price.

Unfortunately our test drive was a base model without leather and luxury package. Assuming yours has this, does it feel like luxurious and worthy of the price tag if you discount the tech and EV aspect of the vehicle?

Ideally I think my wife would prefer an X7 or Escalade. Not sure if I will be able to convince her!

How well does the roof shade work? Also are their side window shades in the back?

No side window shade option on the iX.

My vehicle has the cloth interior (I usually order leathe) and I'm pleasantly surprised how luxurious it is. The microsuede on the doors and dash really are impactful. I do wish an alcantara headliner was an option.

The vehicle I test drove had the dark grey leather and I thought that was very nice - much better than the standard Vernasca leather that comes in the X5

In general, I think the car feels quite luxurious. I wouldn't put it at Mercedes S class luxurious, but the fit and finish is superb and it definitely feels like a luxury vehicle.

I was dubious about the luxury package - mostly due to the crystal controls, but now having it, I don't feel that they are gaudy and I do quite like the wood panel and crystal iDrive dial

The roof shade seems to work quite well for blocking sunlight. When engaged it diffuses vs totally blocks the sunlight. Imagine a cloudy day when you can look at the sun and it looks like disk in the sky.

When the shade is 'turned off' the glass become about 95% clear and it has a tint to it much like a standard glass sunroof. Overall cool tech

That said, I'll have to wait till we have some hot days to see how well the glass works against heat transfer into the interior.

There are no side shades but the rear passenger windows are tinted

Thanks for the AMA offer! I assume yours is an XDrive50. Did you get either the Convenience or Premium package which include Parking Assistant Plus? If so, does your iX have Maneuver Assistant (recording and then playing back a maneuver such as parking in a tight garage)?

Have you tried using Digital Key Plus? If so, how was the experience?

I have used parking assistant plus to park in both parallel and perpendicular spots. I've also used backup assistant. Both features work much like they do in other BMW vehicles.

The build sheet on my vehicle shows parking assistant pro which allows for the parking manoeuvre assistant; however it doesn't seem enabled in my vehicle as there is 'no record new path option'

Also it looks like my vehicle came with backup assistant which allows for a maximum 164ft track vs backup assistant pro which allows for a 656ft track.

I'll give a call into BMW to see what the deal is

**** UPDATE ****

I just got home and checked the Monroney Sticker for the car and it says 'Parking Assistant Plus' although the build sheet said 'Parking Assistant Pro.

Yes I have. I have an iPhone and and an Apple Watch and use them both. I really like this feature and no longer carry a key around.

The downside is that every time you come near your vehicle it will unlock

One thing to keep in mind is that you have to link the digital key to a profile or else the guest profile is selected.

Might want to talk to your doctor about it.

Intersting question... I think if I look at iDrive 8 by itself, it feels evolutionary vs revolutionary . For the most part the software has lots of UI tweaks, but when you click down int the underlying functions (e.g. maps) they are fundamentally the same as in iDrive 7. The Home Screen widgets are certainly interesting and feel like a nod to the 'new' Porsche PCM, and I'd say it took me about 20 minutes to become comfortable with the system. In some cases it is better than iDrive 7 in others it is not e.g. the app menu feels like a throwback to windows 95.

I think where system feels more revolutionary is when you pair it with the iX (e.g. the big screen) and it's EV platform, because there are elements and capabilities that are just different than those available on a ICE platform.

That said, I think BMW hasn't fully explored the possibilities of an EV platform, and there are definitely some appendixes left over from the ICE era. For example limiting cabin climatisation to 15 minutes.

So the short answer to your question is that iDrive 8 in the iX feels revolutionary, because of the platform and because one can see the possibilities. But if iDrive 8 were an upgrade to the current X5, it would feel evolutionary. A nice upgrade, but not a knock your socks off one.

Great idea. Just ran it and it shows parking assistance plus.

I did call BMW Genius earlier to ask about it and whether it would be upgradable to pro, but the CS rep was a bit clueless and went on about not having the necessary wiring and cameras.

I'm surprised you have one - all dealers are forbidden to sell them until 90 days after they are received to have on hand for test drives, etc. I bet your dealer is going to be in trouble.
