Neat car but never very practical. A pain to get in and out of.

This thing was DOA due to its powertrain. I can't fault BMW for trying to innovate, but the performance did not live up to the price.
I'd suspect it would have succeeded had it been pure ICE or a pure EV, especially the latter. It really would have been viewed as an alternative to Tesla.

Most M drivers will never understand (get) the i8. It was never about performance alone.
Amusingly enough, neither is any M car these days All of them are overweight |

What do you mean by succeeded? The i8 was never intended to sell in volume. BMW paid 300k€ alone per car on marketing. It was a sporty efficiency technology sample an the low number of roadsters one of the buying reasons for me. I don't believe in a Z8 like development but dreaming is allowed And yes, as someone stated above, most people don't get the i8. Emission free commute, 5L / 100km at 160 km/h with 600 km range, roof down option, pretty unique. BEVs have 2,3 tons and 250km range at 160 km/h. They CAN go fast but GO 110 km/h to get decent range |

BMW is not a Supercar Manufacturer. Their interest is technology that trickles down to the volume models. The 225xe is kind of a reverse i8. PHEVs will in my opinion be the most relevant bridge technology and PHEV models are coming in large numbers now. I think reasonably well done by BMW.

This. I liked my F80 M3, fast and competent but it was heavy and insulated, not as much fun as a 2002. IMO the best BMWs are the lightest weight BMWs. I love my i8, it has so many personalities. Not fully comfortable with all wheel drive yet, but the chassis stiffness and the dampening are sweet.

Where the I8 failed is with its very limited electric mileage, BMW lied up front and said the I8 would get 25-35 miles, when in fact it was difficult to achieve half of the that distance. I enjoyed my I8 while I owned it! Mike |

I have no trouble whatsoever getting in and out. I have never understood this criticism. Unless you are way out of shape or extremely large all it takes is the right technique. My wife and adult children have no problems either. I don’t give it a second thought.
As for practically, I use it for shopping and errands all the time. The trunk is tiny but there is the very useful back seat. I do most of my local driving in electric mode which is another bonus. I love the car. |

Right leg in and aim your backside to get in, use left arm as a lever to exit (left side road driving). For me with being fused at eight levels in my spine (too many years of jumping out of airplanes in the army and playing rugby in the front row), I found the I8 a more comfortable car to drive than my previous M4.

It is amazing to me how people don't "get" the point of a lot of different classes of cars anymore. My current favorite on this is potential Taycan owners complaining about how it is not "efficient" and doesn't have the best range. And this is for the Turbo and Turbo S. |
