Anyone here buying the Canon 5D Mark II?

I'm thinking about it but I'm also thinking about buying a really nice telephoto L lense. I must confirm that the image quality from the 5D Mark II with a good L lense is really superb. Very film like photos.

Likely yes, but not until the first wave of earlier adopters report any bugs - and some discounts start to become available. Figure when the occasional sale price gets down to around $2-2.3K in March-May is when I'll bite. For most of what I do the crop frame bodies are adequate, but I'd really like to get a FF body to use with my 24L. It's the only really good night landscape/starscape lens I have and it just isn't that wide on a 1.6x body. I also suspect that FF will work better with the 65mm MPE and 135L lenses. My long teles though, will likely stay with the crop bodies.

This is about as long a lens as I'm likely to be using for the foreseeable future unless the L-lens fairy leaves an 800IS under my pillow...

Have 2 bodies on order for myself now... The prototype I played with was pretty bad ass especially at the price point which is just over half of what my Mark 3 bodies cost me.

Remember though its the glass that makes the image and not the body. I'd buy nice glass over a nice body any day first.

I hear a lot of pros are going back to Nikon, D700 (FF) & D300 and of course the old standby the D3. They are say you can buy two Nikons for the same price as the Canon you mentioned!

And like spectrumphoto said, its the glass that counts and Nikon still makes some of the best 2.8F lenses out there for the price! There shutter action speed is pretty quick and quiet.

Nikons have a few big advantages. Autofocus on the D700 or D300 is substantially more sophisticated than on the 5D2 and Nikon's 14-24 is significantly sharper corner-to-corner than Canon's 16-35II. From about 24mm on I think the two systems' lens selections are pretty much at parity.

That said, if you're looking for a high MP camera for a "reasonable" price the 5D2 may be the only game in town right now (I'm not really counting the A900 and the D3X, while a fine camera, costs over twice as much).

Not wanting to turn this into a Black lens vs. White lens war, just commenting that both systems still have their advantages at the pro or amateur level.

Full frame for me is a must so im going to see how well Canon perform with a 1Ds IV when it comes out. If not I might just jump at a 1Ds III due for the sealing rather than the 5D II since most of the weather im starting to face is getting worse and wet.

My current 5D holds up well but rather just go for what I need rather than what I have for just in case situations. Only thing I really like on the 5D II vs my current 5D is the cleaner noise at high ISO.

Not to say mine is bad but just having the options is great. Most times when using high ISO, i couple with flash so I have AF assist in low light so its not that much of a biggie just yet.

The 1200mm does cost quite a bit but Canon and Sigma do have some other weapons also.

Canon's 5200mm f/14 (FD mount)

Sigma's 200-500 f/2.8

You may be waiting a while, the original 5D price never really dropped that much the entire time it was out. The 5DMkII probably won't drop until the 5DMkIII comes out in a few years.

Hmmmmm... you might want to hold the purchase of the 5D Mark II as the newly released version has some bugs.

Simple firmware update. If I was buying on, wouldnt hang about. New models will have this on whilst existing users will just download the update. Nothing to stop me enjoying the camera.

True, but Canon has better colors, and most importantly better skintones. You can mess around in post-RAW processing with Nikon NEF files, but skintones look better on Canons.

It's just what I've seen from shooting a lot of events and some weddings over the years with too many cameras to even list (10D, 20D, 1DMKiiN, 5D, 1DsMKII, 1DMKIII, D2Xs, D3, D300). And other photographers have noticed this as well (there were discussion at The Digital Wedding Forum). It's subtle to some, obvious to others, etc. Skintones are hard to get right - especially with digital. For me, it was always less post work in ACR/Lightroom to get Canon skintones to look right, where with Nikon NEFs it was more work. Check out this post from Jeff Ascough on photo.net:

http://photo.net/wedding-photography-forum/00PwZb

Jeff is one of the best there is in the business and not getting paid by Canon, etc.
