BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
A little unboxing therapy while I wait to take delivery of my iX. The dealership invited me to collect my complimentary Wallbox Gen 3 today.

Oh yes please! Maybe push it to YouTube as there is virtually no Gen 3 wallbox videos on there.

I have tried the youtube embed link too but it just displays the code and not the embed. Here's the link: BMW Wallbox Gen 3

Awesome, thanks for sharing this. The metallic looking blue charge cable is nice!

These BMW Wallbox chargers are pretty cool in that they support single phase and 3 phase in the same unit.

The install instructions are crazy. And it has smartphone connectivity too (through bluetooth I believe.

Cool, BMW offers a 120V option.. Meaning you can you use a standard household power outlet without upgrading the wiring or circuit breaker to charge your vehicle..

240V fast charging is also available if your home wiring and electrical panel can handle the upgrade. Some older homes would require new wiring and possible recertification to implement this option.

Yes you can - if you want to wait 5 days to fully charge your car.

Ouch.. I guess it's time to pay up and hire an electrician for a 240v wiring/breaker upgrade.

You can write off some of the expense to install a wall outlet on your federal taxes (some states also) but it depends on the year and the incentive/rebates available for that specific time period.

Not sure about BMW but Tesla even covers a substantial portion of the cost of installation if you list your charging station as "public." But that sounds like a horrible idea for a home unit, unless it's on a business premise and offering recharging is absorbed as incentive to your customers.

Your local electric utility may offer a rebate for installation too. Check. Ours gave us $500 towards the actual charger and $500 towards install. Both were a rebate to submit after but it only took two weeks to get a check.

Correct.

3.6kw max, realistically more like 3-3.2 through level 1 (110v). If you're charging an iX with one of those divide that into 105Ah battery to get your charging time.

iX/i4 are coming with the new flex charger that is better, especially on 220v compared to the previous turbo cord. In that case all owners would need is the correct Nema 14-50R outlet in their garage (with a 50A circuit ideally) to connect and charge more efficiently.

This is likely specific to either NZ ou your dealer. We don’t get the Wallbox in Canada.

Yeah it’s a BMW NZ promotion for all electric vehicles sold until 1 Jun 2022 I think.

Assuming you have a "normal" 120V outlet, it will either be on a 20A or 15A circuit.
The most continuous amperage you should draw on them are 16A or 12A.

This means that you can expect to pull from 1.4 to 1.9 kW max on a LVL 1 charger.

I wired the Wallbox up to an industrial plug using 6mm 32a capable wire to connect to our 32a single phase industrial socket at home. Initialised the Wallbox and updated the firmware, and the app shows full 32a available for charging. I’ll report back on charging performance once I get my IX.

No. Unless your dealer throws it in with the purchase.

I was advised by the BMW Genius that max power output for Gen 2 is 11kW while Gen 3 goes up to 22kW. Unfortunately, I am not able to find anything online to confirm this.

Even if that is the case, it might not make any difference for the iX as it is fitted with a Type 2 AC 11kW on-board charger. Nevertheless, the Gen 3 (with 22kW?) will be a better future-proof charger to have as well as if you have other EV that has a higher on-board charger.

I have gen. 2 an it can charge also 22, so it should be just new design. I was just wondering if it doesn’t come with some feature like app for phone or ability to charge from photovoltaic panels etc…
Thanks!
