Rear ended - bumper/shock absorber

Hello all,

Yesterday was rear ended while stopped at a red light. The superficial damage is very minor, I'm not even going to pursue repair for it...i think.

What i'm worried about is the shock absorber, that I'm assuming is underneath. I'm hoping this little section comes off and there's a shock absorber underneath. This would be probably too good to be true.
I've attached an image.

Anyone have any info? The outlined part has a small space between it and the main part of the bumper, which is making me hope that it is indeed isolated.

Thanks!

Depends on the force of the impact. If the rear collision was more than just a parking type nudge, there potentially could be damage extending beyond the bumper and into the interior frame and parts of the i8, despite the outward damage appearing minor and superficial. Today's vehicles are designed with energy-absorbing crumple zones in order to spread the energy from impact throughout the chassis for safety reasons. I would have the vehicle inspected by either a local or BMW body shop for peace of mind.

sigh, thanks for the reply.
i know thats the right thing to do, especially since i'm thinking about buying this car.

It's such a pain in the ass going to the dealer, 90 miles away.

You can always have a local and reputable body shop (your insurance agent should be able to refer you to a few)hoist the vehicle on a lift to inspect for subframe damage. If repair is needed, then decide whether to accept their estimate or make the 90-mile trek to your dealership for a second estimate.

Fingers crossed that your subframe is intact and a dent-pro job is all that's needed.

Totally agree, go to a good body shop in your area, they may have to remove your bumper and will see what's up. I had the same incident on my 330i and some of the shock absorbers had to be replaced, plus the bumper was repainted. Couldn't tell! Other party insurance paid for it.

video of impact

Here's the clip of getting hit.
What is the clicking sound? I know it's probably hard to tell, but wondering but what your take is on how hard the impact is.
Thanks!

My nightmare scenario - for some reason people want to get close.

The clicking sound is probably the licence plate of either your car or the other one - my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply, I think you're probably right,

I did finally take it to the BMW collision center. They told me they don't think I even need to look under the bumper as the damage is so minimal.

That part is separate from the bumper, it's available and only $58!.
There's a couple of things behind it that part that need to be changed, and then with painting, the whole thing will be around $225.
Unbelievable that I'll be getting away with something that cheap.

Looks like the driver was falling asleep or Looking down on his cell phone..
Sorry to hear that you got hit..

You can remove the part..
Looks cleaner without it here in the US. We have that bump stopper but and Europe they don't have it.
