Next Gen i8 and wishful thinking
ILLUSTRATION BY RADOVAN VARICAK This is by far THE BEST rendering I have seen for the next gen i8. Lets hope BMW steals it instead of stealing from Lamborghini to create what I consider is an ugly baby lambo ripoff. This design + opening the rear channels for the iconic rear wind i8 look is the best its gonna get. This design, 600+ hp, equivalent or better tech than 8 series, double the range, and a more premium interior is all I ask for. Thats what would make this worth spending $100k+ on. |

It needs black cf wheels. I would buy one, 500HP or even 400HP would be fine if weight close to 1400K. I do want to be able to spin tires though.
Interesting visual trick on the kidneys, blocking out the middle so it does not have the ludicrous nostrils of the new 4 series. Must keep the minimal rear seat functionality. The i8 has gained a reputation, is arguably one of the best 'flagship' models in recent history. I am really surprised how every kid seems to know what it is. They roll down their windows at stoplights and wave and politely but excitedly ask, "excuse me sir, is that a BMW i8?" And the i8 gets a ton of attention at exotic car gatherings, way more than the hum-drum Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, Vettes... It is the 'thinking person's' cool car. Great PR for BMW.

I feel like the general consensus on the M Next was that it was ugly It is cancelled but I doubt forever. I'd say we see a new model within 5 years. I expect BMW to continue to expand the i-series, I foresee a line-up such as i3, i4, iX3, iX4, i8/i8M at some point in the future. The "cancellation" was never actually a press release statement. Just came from a "inside source", I doubt anything was scrapped. They are waiting to see the full financial impact of COVID which I agree with Last edited by nike13; 07-12-2020 at 12:26 PM.. |

Thread resurrection...
Has anyone heard anything about a 2024 i8 M coming out in 2023? I know BMW was talking about producing an i8 M but the plans were shelved in 2020. There are more recent articles that suggest BMW will build it in 2023 as a 2024 model. https://www.carindigo.com/news/2024-...sion-m-concept https://bmwsuvmodels.com/2024-bmw-i8/ There's even something on the BMW USA website regarding the Vision M NEXT: https://www.bmwusa.com/concept-vehic...on-m-next.html Anyone????

2. PHEV capability ala Porsche 918 would be great, but ultimately some form of hybrid is likely even without that. I'd be happy with something I can commute and get 40-50+ mpg with, but still has 500+ hp on tap when I want to do some spirited driving or track time. I think a good engine choice (keeping in mind weight / size limitations) would likely be the S58. Paired with electric motors you could easily hit 600+ hp and if the weight is kept down (target: less than the M2; current is 3500 lbs i8, 3600 lbs M2) it would be decisively quick. 3. I imagine it would get a variant on the new i4 interior, though I actually prefer the M4/M3 interiors. Just update the current i8 interior to be in line with that and I'd be happy, rather than jumping to the newer i4 stuff. I have a feeling they'll go straight to next gen post-i4 design though.

I would love to see The 2.0l diesel from the 20/28d series. Tuned to 300 or 350 horse. You would get loads of torque to spin them when you want to 400+lbs easily. 50 mpg+ With the new 8 speed my x3 gets that @45-55mph. At least 50 miles elctric only range this time. Also DC fast charging. You can get a modern 25-30kwh battery to easily fit in the area the 2010 Era designed battery the current i8 has. That would support more oomph for a better front electric motor. Easily a 250 horse. With peak electric boost at 300 horse a sort of "overboost" for launches and track straights. Would be a real contender and keep the weight down too 3k lbs. Would be much quicker than the old one too.
