Our oldest son and his wife are moving to Japan (not Okinawa) in early '24 for a three-year billet. It is voluntary, they are both very excited, and already beginning to embrace the culture. So I got him the Lego Bonsai (which comes with leaves and spring blossoms - very cool) and her the Orchid. Both $49.99.

Lived on Honshu for 3 years and have lots of memories. Riding my 500cc two stroke bike to Suzuka or climbing Mr. Fuji getting my walking stick branded up the climb. Visiting Sapparoro well that was not by choice but fun. Uncle sent us. Tell your Son and his wife to explore. Don't stay in typical enclaves of Americans.
