Anyone try any coding on an i8?

I've had the chance to code plenty of F-Series BMW's F3X, F10, F01, etc, and even an i3 but I don't see much discussion of it on the i8.

Has anyone here tried? If anyone is located in New York and want's to give it a shot let me know!

You mean play Russian Roulette with the warranty? I'm sure you'll find plenty of i8 takers. After all, once again the BMW factory didn't make the car right. We hate when that happens. What are you going to do? Increase the HP of the 3 cylinder engine? What else that BMW didn't do right do you think needs to be changed?

You are, after all, asking to tinker with one of our i8s. So what do you have in mind?

I'm offering, not asking, I could care less if I get to mess with an i8. I've "played Russian roulette" with cars much more expensive then the i8 so there really is no need for you to sound so stuck up here. I've coded a LOT of cars and it does not effect the warranty.

Coding has never been about increasing horsepower and no one is claiming that car factory didn't make the car right. Coding is about changing convenience features. Making the mirrors fold when you lock the car, being able to roll up windows with the key, removing the legal disclaimer on the iDrive startup, allowing use of the rear view cam in motion, etc, etc.

Yeah I can understand that, I've never heard of someone having a warranty issue from coding. Mainly because even if they see your car is coded, how can they try to say that the reason you have a drivetrain malfunction is because your mirrors are set to fold when you lock the car LOL!

LOL a sucker for what? I'm not asking for money, a review, anything, I'm simply offering this for free, as I do to all BMW community members.

I guess you feel as though the i8 owners are on a whole next level of some sort, better then all of the "suckers" with M3's M6's 750's, anything really. You name it, I've coded it.

Looks like one of your fellow i8 owners is not so naive.

I've never heard someone who was willing to play Russian Roulette called "not so naive." I guess I learn something new every day.

I'm referring to you being naive for not seeing the benefits of coding a car, something that many, many BMW owners have done.

I've been a practicing trial lawyer for 43 years. First time I've been called naive.

I just don't want some voodoo artist screwing with my car's electronics. Stupid me!

LOL! Fine, I will keep my Voodoo to myself, I guess only those of us with cars other then the i8 will enjoy the benefits of coding.

Coding is one of the most popular thing's to do in the BMW community for all cars from the 3 series all the way up to a $140k M6. You should go into the coding forum and express the same sentiments as you do here.

There really should be a better term than "coding" to describe this. I'm medical so when someone says "I coded my i8" or "anyone what to code their i8?" I see "I killed my i8" or "anyone want to kill their i8" or in a best case I interpret it as someone's i8 "threw a code". Anyway, just saying reprogramming would clear up a lot of confusion.

If you can find the hex key to flip to activate comfort access let us know, since there's no physical reason it can't be done. The proximity sensor for the key is already there, and the door locks/releases are electronic

You're saying that the i8 doesn't come with comfort access standard? If its true that all of the sensors are already there then it should be as simple as adding it to the vehicle order and then "reprogramming" the car to think that it has it. On F3X vehicle's there is a difference between CA and non-CA keys. This might or might not be the case on the i8.

It's an option in Europe but unavailable here. Hey say the 2015s will have it standard, but the proximity sensor for remote start is present. It feels like it's just a switch they didn't want to flip for whatever reason on US cars.

It's particularly frustrating since my '14 Ford Fiesta ST has comfort access and remote start standard.

That is completely possible.

The easiest way to test what's possible is to add it to the vehicle order of an i8 and if it accepts it as a valid option then the whole car can be programmed to think it has it. Whether or not it will work is another thing.

Believe it or not it would only take a few minutes to test this theory out.

Looking into it some more it looks like there are different part number's for car's with Comfort Access:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...31&hg=51&fg=10

See part number 16 on that diagram. Listed as one part for cars with CA and one for cars without.

While I do not recommend it for safety purposes, yes, DVD in Motion can be enabled.

I've coded all my BMWs and I'll be coding my i8 when it arrives later this month.

I plan to do:

-fold side mirrors when locking
-FA code "euro" adaptive LED lighting (did this on my M4 and made a huge difference)
-enable USB video

Honestly guys, its not anything dangerous. Everything is reversible and all you are doing is enabling features that are available in different markets. Your car is coded from the factory to disable certain features and all you are doing is turning them back on.

I think the word "coding" makes it sound a lot scarier than it really is
