How can I quickly get out of manual shift mode back to automatic?

I know how to go from automatic shift mode (S1, S2, etc.) to manual shift mode (M1, M2, etc.) by tapping a shift paddle, but how do I go back quickly to automatic mode?

A few times I've accidentally hit a shift paddle near the steering wheel and the only way I've figured out how to get back to automatic is to change driving modes from Sport to Comfort and then back again. Any ideas? Thanks.

That's only way I've seen and it is what the manual says to do to go back to automatic. I can flick it back and forth pretty fast (I like to take over and give up shifting a bit).

Maybe the more experienced BMW owners have a secret handshake?

i think in comfort or ecopro mode, don't touch the paddles for a few seconds and it comes back to auto by itself.

In sport mode, when you are in manual, switch the gear lever quickly to comfort mode and then back in sport and you should be in auto mode again (s1, s2, s3 etc).

The only way to get the i8 to return to autoshift is to flick the gearshift lever left to right.

If BMW is listening, just do what every other automaker with paddle shift cars does, make it to where holding the "+" paddle returns to automatic.

BMW has decided to do it it's own way and has done so since at least 2005. I suspect it will change when it stops making kidney grilles.

Funny not any time soon then

Don't think there is a short cut but as you say " it doesn't take long to shift the lever right then left again" Right hand drive

Easiest thing in the world for BMW to fix, with a software update. But they will not unless there was a lot of demand for it.

And personally there are many other things I'd have first e.g. RPM in HUD and centre of tacho.

I don't see what's so hard in moving the gear leaver left then right quickly. Is this really of concern guys?

There can be a couple second delay when shifting modes, during that time brake regeneration resets as well so if you are doing it as you coast to a stop, for example at a stop light, it will feel like you completely lost brakes and you have to push harder to get into the actual brakes, at which point the regen kicks back in and you're way deeper than you need to be in the pedal at that point and the car jerks to a halt. It also cuts power when you do it for a fraction of a second and if you're doing anything but coasting it can be disconcerting...

so yes, it is a concern and would be a lot better if you just had to hold the "+" paddle for a couple seconds to shift back to "auto" sport.
