Any former E92 owners?
Any former E92, or any E9X for that matter, that now have a 2 series? If so, let me know which model and your thoughts. I'm considering going from a 2007 328xi coupe to a 230i w/ xDrive (trying to decide on M sport trim, track handling, etc). Pics of yours would be a bonus.

One of my old cars was an e90 335i. 2007 RWD 6-speed with sport package. I also had driven a plethora of other e90 variants as loaners. My current M240i is better in most regards. A definite + I would give to the e90 is the steering had better feel/feedback. Also, the HK Logic 7 system in the e90 sounds better than the HK system in the m240i.
I liked the suspension on the e90, but it was firm all the time with a tendency to crash over rough roads. The m240i has the adaptive suspension (the 230i would require to track handling package for this) which even in sport/sport+ modes is not as crashy as the 335i sport suspension, although it feels a little under-damped in those modes. I also had a rental 228i with the standard suspension, and it was way too soft for my liking. Power delivery, transmission, infotainment, interior, etc., all go to the F22.

I've had two: a 2009 335i (RWD, manual, Sport package), and a 2012 (auto, xDrive, M-Sport).
While I dearly miss the steering feel and weight of the E92, my M240i (manual, RWD) is a clearly superior car. The B58 engine is a beast, the MPSS tires have a ton of grip, and the M Adaptive dampers are quite competent in smoothing out road imperfections (a tough job out here in Quebec). I also much prefer the smaller size, though on long weekends with the GF's kids I could use a larger trunk. |

Had E92 335i 6-speed with sport pack, now have M235i 6-speed with M-LSD
M235i feels more solid, more reliable, more fun to drive, 6-speed tranny feels much better. But that said E92 didnt feel special and got boring after 1 year, M235i doesnt feel that special either, but not bored yet cause like I said, its more fun and a better car in general. E92 had some issues including major issues with turbos, so far M235i is rock solid but I only have 20k miles (knock on wood) |

2007 e90 335i, it was an awesome car to drive, I loved it. However...
I feel my 228i Msport is better in every aspect. Other than the 335i having more power. The 228i has plenty of power for me though. |

I had a 2008 E92 335i 6MT
I loved that car and regretted finally selling it 6 weeks ago. The major attraction of the F22 has been the suspension. On the E92, I had Koni Yellows with H&R Sport Springs (and for the last year BMW Performance Springs) and the suspension was quite hard. It felt great on windy roads, but was murder in the city. I really appreciate the adaptive suspension on the F22 and I highly recommend it. I agree with the point above that it's underdamped, but the car still handles very well and it gives you a nice option when the road becomes bumpy. What I miss, like the others stated above, is the E92's steering feel. Electric steering just doesn't get it exactly right. But short of buying a Subaru STI, there are no hydraulic steering cars left on the market.
I think you'll be pleased with the 230i. The car will be somewhat more tossable than your current car and it should be much more powerful. I also think the interior of the F22 is somewhat better than the E90 interiors. |

Had a 2007 E90 335 with AT. Loved that car, sigh. My 240 is probably better in every way except for steering feel, and weight, but I recall how the RFTs on my E90 would crash over every imperfection and hop sideways in less than smooth corners taken at speed.

I think your m240 x-drive is about the same weight as a 2007 335i rwd auto ~3650 pounds.

I had a 335i retractable and like my current 135is much better. Based on the test drive of the M240i, I'll like it better still.
I do miss the retractable hardtop in bad weather but the rest of the car makes up for it. |

On paper yes but the chassis just felt lighter in the E90 - maybe a combination of electric steering, and xDrive? It's been 4 years so I probably have rose coloured glasses thinking back...

The m240i is just as capable in the handling department at the limits, but due to having a suspension that only firms up when it needs to, and having dumbed down steering feel, it gives you a sense of a more luxury ride.

I had a 2013 E92 328 X-drive. I miss the steering feel and the slightly more handsome looks.
I would strongly suggest the Track handling package in the 230. Without it, the car felt very "floaty" to me. It also nets you the very very nice sport steering wheel. All told, my m240i is a massive upgrade but it doesn't trounce the E92 in every category -- just most of the them. |

You know, I am surprised at the weight preferences of the e90, my sister has an e92 328i 6MT, since she had a kid I've kind of driven that car on and off since she left it kind of rotting infront of my place. But weight wise, It feels heavier than the F22, by contrast, my GFs 135i feels much more light and has that old school BMW feel.
The M235i is a much more capable car on paper, but there is something that I really love about the 1 series. I have been debating picking up a 128i to mess around with (I want an NA car). Would love to do some light modding (intake manifold, headers etc) on a 128, it gets it a bit more oopmph, but man if a modern day (sort of) bimmer reminded me of the e36, its the 1 series.

Nowdays, BMW has gone to great lengths to isolate the current crop of cars from the road. EPS will never feel like old-school BMW steering, nor do they want it to. Adaptive suspensions transmit very little of what's beneath you. That straight 6 song? That has been so muted by BMWs effort to have Lexus like NVH refinement that engine sound must be synthesized through the speakers. There are so many driving nannies and modes that it feels like the car has a mind of it's own... The e9x 3-series and e8x 1-series/X1 are really the last BMWs that feel like an actual BMW. Unfortunately they've all been Bangleized to some degree.

Lots of comments here on the firmness of the E92 suspension. We had sports suspension on a coupe and it was downright bone-rattling. Fine for that occasional run on the twisties but otherwise very uncomfortable. I LOVE the adaptable suspension on my 235 and would recommend that option to anyone considering a 230. It is standard on the 240.

Huge improvement with the RFT over my 2006 MT E92 Jumped to an M2.....OMG...day and night the M2 is a great car feels like the old E46 with a ton more power and more capability. Love the M2 the best one I have ever had....wish we had more open roads to drive it on. |
