i8 as a Daily Driver

I'm thinking about purchasing an i8 (Not Lease) to use as a daily driver to drive me to and from work (Nothing more Nothing Less) as I drive about 40 miles a day minimum. On the weekends I have an older ('96 Toyota Supra Turbo)

I wanted to gauge opinions of current owners if this is feasible as I'm looking at alot of i8's that are lightly used and in the mid 80 range or low 90 with a few thousand miles on them (Under 10). I currently drive a Prius LOL, but now want to drive something a little more enjoyable

The i8 was my daily driver for 34 months. It was very easy to drive. The only hardship was entering and exiting.

It was so easy to drive that long about month 30 it began to bore me to death. I feel alive again, now that I've chucked it and got an AMG GT. (The M4 helps, too.)

the i8 in every level is better DD than the GT, this coming from a guy that had both at the same time as DD .(in fact i actually had a GTs)

Music to my ears.
Great DD, great cruiser. Space, however, is clearly an issue. And depreciation. And hyper-noticeability.

The i8 really shines as a daily driver. The seating position is comfortable, visibility is good and it's easy to maneuver in traffic. On a bad road it will bounce you around a bit, but not a deal killer.

As far as the doors go they're not that bad. I banged my head a couple times early on but got the procedure down.

I would definitely call it daily drivable. Being hybrid, it's obviously great on gas. The chassis is quite stiff, but the seats are plenty comfortable. Visibility is great - even the rear window is fine, and because it's loaded with sensors and cameras, parking and reverse is not an issue. I would say the cons are:

* Low clearance, can be annoying at times.
* Attention grabber.
* Not a lot of cargo space.
* Doors can be tricky if you park too close.
* Nice tech, but missing some standard stuff - adaptive cruise control, better audio system, blind spot indicators, adjustment memory settings.

I DD it, and it's great. If your 40 miles is round trip, and you have a chance to recharge at work, a tank of gas will last you months, if you so choose. The occasional urge to put it in Sport and show the rest of the world what it can do, may get in the way of this, though. ;-) After almost three years of ownership, I pick my show-off moments more carefully and still take joy in the looks when people expect a roar and it takes of with a slight electric hum.

My current tank of gas has lasted me over 1500 miles so far, and it's still one-third full. I love this thing!

Not to mention 4wd - not sure what the snow situation is in Ohio but I believe you do get it, the 4wd could be useful (although low ground clearance not good for the deep stuff!)

Mine is driven everyday as a daily. the only issue is getting in and out but other than that it is an excellent daily driver and incredible over long distances.

Bought one yesterday to do exactly that.

Beyond depreciation should be a good DD. Anyone figured out if we can get automatic cruise control working?

It doesn't have a radar camera, so no...not going to happen unless it's added to the new model.

I like mine as a DD, but cargo space is severely limited. You will also need to get used to people asking you constantly what it is, how much does it cost, what do you do, etc. Gets kind of old, actually.

I thought the exhaust sounded too tame, so I upgraded with MaxHaust mod, and that is one thing that always amazes other car people. You can check out my other thread on installing it if you decide to get one.

All in all, I love it, but when the lease is up I will probably get a black mercedes AMG of some sort, tint the windows so no one can see me, and call it a day

Definitely recommend as a daily drive it’s the best of both worlds tootle along or a manic scream when you want it to be it’s like having two cars in one with a spilt personality. Go for it you won’t regret it but a smile on your face every day !

It's a good DD because it became a boring snooze 2 1/2 years into my driving it. I'm loving every minute of my AMG GT and not missing the i8 at all. Especially getting in and out.
