BMW i4 M50 vs Model 3 Performance. 0-220 kmh

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Okay, I did a crude side by side, but it looks like the Model 3P crosses the qtr mile around 117mph and the M50 well over 120mph if the speedometer isn't super optimistic. If the speedo is accurate, it might be traveling 125mph. Just doesn't make sense when the i4 M50 weighs about 1000 more and makes about the same HP after 10 seconds of full throttle. BMW sandbagging?

Maybe? Maybe not.

I did a.comparison of the HP/torque/weight of both cars.

Power to weight ratios for the cars is about the same.

Possibly both? Combination of BMW sandbagging (which it is well known for doing) and the speedo being fast (also common among BMWs). If the BMW is actually doing 120 or 121 when the Tesla is doing 117, then that would equate to the usual BMW sandbagging.

Here's an interesting analysis of projected qtr mile times. The i4 does trap 120mph in the quarter. But the Tesla is so quick off the line the BMW never catches it in the qtr mile. But I must say I have never seen a Model 3 run these quick numbers. I also wonder if the prediction model includes the limited power boost function in the HP calculations.

Running numbers from a data sheet in some simulator software dosent show anything. We have to wait until both cars can be tested head 2 head

I think you should compare the i4 m50 to the Taycan 4S. They should be neck to neck on the 1/4 mile. The Taycan has achieved around 11.6 to 11.7 for the 1/4 mile and 120 mph to 122 mph trap speed. Porsche claims 12.1 for the 1/4 mile but they are sandbagging.

Model 3 Performance typically runs 11.4-11.6 @ 116-118 mph in the 1/4 mile.

So it looks like after the exceptional launch of the Tesla, its pretty hard to reel it in before the qtr mile.

BMW i4 M50 vs Model 3 Performance. 0-220 kmh

Interesting results, hard to see in such a short clip but I'm sure its just the beginning as they will be direct competitors for sure

Its also interesting how the Dragy seems to lag behind the Tesla Speedometer by about 4-5mph. Is the Tesla speedo optimistic, or is the Drag display just delayed? Going off of just the speedometers gives the BMW a significant quarter mile trap speed advantage. But perhaps the BMW is even more optimistic, but it can't be by that amount of difference. I think it is simply pulling harder around 100 mph.

Historically BMW speedometers read higher than actual. There used to be a menu buried in the system where you could read the actual speed.

I don't know about Tesla.

I believe BMW tune the drivetrain to be better at higher speed, the model 3 is not so good at it. 100-200 in 10.12 sec is not impressive at all for an 513hp car.

Crazy. 20 years from now electric cars will be fully self driving with dedicated lanes and 120 MPH limits and make our gas guzzlers pedestrian by comparison.

I think you really need to wait for real life test...

M3P does 0-60 in 3.... the i4 is almost a full second slower...

The current reviews have the M50 at 3.6/7.
Plenty fast enough for reaction time to matter a lot.

The TM3P is 3.1. The power to weight/torque is almost identical between the cars

A car is more than 0-60 times.

Stand a peeled boiled egg.on end, slice straight down, then lay it on the cut you just made..... Model 3/Y.

Yuck.

Carwow got 3.3 in the TM3P and 3.6 in the i4 M50. So the supposedly factory spec .8 sec difference isn't even half that in real life. Also, being on a road trip in another country, its quite possible Matt had a lot of gear in the trunk of the i4. There difference is not going to be almost a second!

Completely agree; the 0-60 3.1 number that frequently gets quoted for the TM3P allows for rollout. Without it, it's typically 3.3. People often also compare and mix 0-60 with 0-62 (100kmh). The number BMW quote is 3.9 for 0-62 (100kmh) without rollout which why Mat got 3.62 for 0-60. Matt's numbers are very close to the simulation.
