Was just watching this. Carwow very quick off the mark.

My take away, excellent car from BMW. This looks very even is the drag racing; BMW perhaps a small win when it comes to top end speeds.

Tesla a win in the braking but that's what 400kgs extra does for you.

For those wanting the BMW experience interior and autobahn pace, this is it!

This is the one we've all been waiting for, haven't we?

Personally, I don't care about the off-the-line performance, but it's nice to see the M50 deliver on its promise anyway.

With this kind of performance, I don't see why anybody would ever consider a TM3 again, aside from due to the potential price difference, of course.

I expected the TM3 Performance to pull off the line and lead the entire way with the BMW playing catch up with its better top-end, but wow color me surprised a good way.

The M50 definitely shows its legs on the back half of the 1/4 mile and the verve to keep accelerating.

The Tesla has ran 11.4 in other different independent tests from its owners, so it sounds like maybe the BMW in certain conditions could actually run 11.2-11.3, guess I will find out when I get mine

Did anybody notice that bmw had 134 miles of range left? So, it wasnít fully charged. It had rather ~50% of charge during the race.

With the exception of the actual 1/4 mile times, this is exactly what we’ve been predicting - Tesla quicker at street speeds, BMW quicker over 100 mph.

The BMW’s extra weight is the biggest factor in all of those results, especially the braking.

Looks like there was a quick shot during the rolling race showing the BMW at 56% SoC.

That would translate to 240 miles of actual range, which is pretty decent given they were pretty much testing it for acceleration and it's on the 20" wheels and this particular test wasn't to maximize range. BMW cites on the 20" wheel'd M50 an EPA range of 227 miles, so this tells me BMW is sandbagging their range estimates.

Keep in mind the advantage Tesla has is their supercharger network. That is a massive advantage. But yea I wouldn't buy a Tesla. But that supercharger network makes me think twice.

Agreed. I just finished a 300 miles plus round trip in a Tesla. It's so easy and hassle free due to vast supercharger network.
Also having a frunk and very roomy back seat are important for some people.

Nice results from BMW. With that said, am I the only one to find EV races boring? The lack of engine sound and gear shifting, along with the possibility of driver error out of the equation is just, well, boring.

Never thought that would have been the case with 10-11 sec cars straight from the showroom floor before.

It's also crazy to think that average non car men/women (people who don't know the difference between a Prius and a Bugatti Chiron) are going to be driving around in cars that accelerate this fast, with no real experience of any kind with performance driving in the past.

I agree the off the line thing gets old quick, which is why I passed even after two test drives in Model S cars years apart. That said, that's a big part of what folks want from these cars, so it becomes an important metric for them. Color me unimpressed.

Also, the Cult of Elon is still pretty strong. Folks eat those cars up because they idolize him personally, so they will continue to sell just off of that for some time. Eventually it will fade. The supercharger network is a big plus too. No other manufacturer can offer that right now.

Don't let Elon see this. It'll be a remote update to all the models by the end of the week.

He didn't like when the first Taycan results showed up.

Very closely matched.

I wonder if the fact that that particular Tesla has nearly 21k miles on the clock (2019 model) and glued on fibreglass tat has dropped some performance?

In another Carwow test the TM3P does an 11.7 on a wet track, which makes the race even closer. Shame Matt didn't get the same TM3P from the other races for consistency. But nonetheless both are rapid cars for street use.

It's only an advantage if you don't have level 2 at home. Also no plan for Bay Area to LA trips.

I've had level 2.at home for 7 years to charge the 3 EVs that I've had.

We are talking December time in the UK so conditions even if dry will have a certain amount of slip and unless I am mistaken EVs work at their best in warmer conditions too so the times achieved probably reflect this.

I was actually hoping for Matt to test the limiter on the M50 to see if itís 140mph or a little more.

It'd be nice to see CarWow drive some cars around the track rather than posting yet another drag race video. I get that these get a ton of clicks but their shtick is getting rather tiresome now.

Thereís a few interesting performance EVs coming this year like the Kia EV6 GT, looking forward to Matt paring it with both the M50 and M3P.

Iím actually looking forward to seeing the M50 against the Eton GT because that should be a pretty good pairing.
