iX Cargo Trunk Area vs X5 -- Measured Dimensions

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Seems to be a lot of debate about this, so I went to my dealer and measured both side by side. BMW says that the trunk volume in is 500l on both cars. The measurements support this in that that the width and depth are virtually identical, but surprisingly the iX offers more space under the parcel shelf.

Note, this does not include the cutouts in the sidewall of the X5 cargo area since they do not make much difference in the bigger scheme of things.

Yeah, I think it's an optical illusion with the way the rear hatch opens and the cargo walls are built - where the car seems so much wider than the cargo area itself.

I assume as well that this doesn't include the extra cutout space on the sides of the X5 cargo area. Pretty much useless for luggage, etc but a nice space for small items.

Correct, I did not include the cutouts since they do not make much difference in the bigger scheme of things.

Yes.

I compared mine to my wife's 958 Cayenne. it was similar, and therefore useful to us. The G05 X5 is larger, IMO, but only up in the vertical space at the back.

So it's only 1 cm wider and 5 cm deeper than the iX3. Not a lot…

We checked as well as we are interested in the upcoming iXM60.. compared to my 21'X5M50i trunk space is way less roomy. I have two Great Pyrenees dogs and both fit fine in X5 without needing to pull down rear seat (for short under 30mins drives). We did a road trip with one and he chilled in the back with his bed comfortably for 7+ hrs. In iX fitting just one was a challenge, due to the lower height of trunk and closed swoopy rear design.
But was impressed by iX acceleration; the M60 is going to be explosive in acceleration feel…

If you're a golfer who store their golf bag with other daily things like a cooler box, this is sorta deal breaker. With G05 X5, I can close the trunk cover with two golfbags (one inserted into the cutout, and other one on top of it going across the trunk) and a medium sized cooler.

I don't believe I can do this with the iX's trunk... sadly

Strange. All the documents so far I've seen about the X5 is 645 l of cargo space and the iX 500 l. The X5 45e is 500 l but the others should have bigger boot. Even the 7 seater option is with 645 l.

I think the 650 maybe includes under floor space of which there isn't much in the PHEV X5.

Correct. This is a convenient omission by car media. The above floor capacity of the iX and X5 are comparable at 500l

Not sure what you’re saying - are you saying that underfloor capacity doesn’t count as useful storage? Of course it is useful. To store things that won’t have to compete for space in above floor storage, or in some cases be prone to damage when fully loaded.

I didn't know about this. Well to be honest in person the above floor area didn't really look like 165 l less than the X5. I don't usually use the underfloor compartment anyway.

There is no universal way of measuring the cargo trunk capacity.

BMW uses the VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie) method, using 200x100x50xmm blocks filling up to the parcel shelf for cargo volume behind second row. Other manufacturers like Tesla would measure up to the roof. And some other use SAE method which uses smaller blocks and would give a larger number than VDA.

It can be hard to explain the differences unless we know the exact way they measure it, and comparing specifications between different manufacturers may not be valid.

They make a world of difference when carrying a bag of golf clubs across the cargo area.

Does the iX have a 3rd row option?

.. they make a massive difference in the usability of the trunk. I would much rather have more volume in width than height. Coolers, boxes, golf clubs, etc. Geometry of the trunk and entrance matter a lot.

It's sort of a double edged sword though. The dimensions of the iX and X5 cargo space as posted are nearly identical to that of my e-tron. My ski poles and golf clubs will fit parallel using the cutouts, but you have to sort of angle them to get them in, and all it really does is 1) make things fit parallel rather than at an angle, and 2) make it harder to get them out again. It really just encourages me to scrape up the walls trying to wedge those things into the space, so I've just given up and simply tilted things a bit. There's something to be said for the space not being larger than the opening. The side pockets are handy for small items though.
