BMW iX 50 Review // Fugly But Fabulous [Extra Throttle House]

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Quote:
The 2022 BMW iX xDrive 50 ($117,400 CAD as specced, ~$101,825 USD as specced) is an all new electric vehicle that can travel up to 521 kilometers/323 Miles on a single charge. To achieve this range, it has been thoroughly designed with efficiency in mind. This includes a combination of low power consumption for normal use and a low drag coefficient that approaches even the mighty Lucid Air. The iX xDrive 50 can also be optioned with the 30 speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, providing the driver and all their passengers with an incredible auditory experience, But just how does the new 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 perform as a daily driver? And is it worth the price among its competition? Watch to find out what the guys think!

They touched on the same thing my wife said. Looking at it from the outside, it doesn't look like a $100k car.

Isn't that a 3/Y? Either way the S or X don't do it for me either.

That's a $120,000 Model X. I suppose beauty is relative and in the eye of the beholder. Cost obviously doesn't translate to the exterior of the car, in more than one case for more than one manufacturer, for more than one person. Or quoting Walt Kelly, "One man's meat is another man's cold asparagus." This car, for example, is not particularly attractive to me:

And you're looking at about $2M on the hoof. Would I turn one down free for eating crackers in bed? Probably not.

The interior pic is from a model X but the exterior pic is a model Y (maybe 3)
The model X has the front door handles that almost touch the rear ones and on everyone I have ever seen in person, are obviously misaligned.

I've had my vehicle for a number of days, and I'm actually finding it less attractive than when I first got it. This in particular for the side view which was my least favourite angle to begin with. However, The rear view was initially my favourite view, but the now the front is - beaver teeth included. That said, I find angles I don't like on just about every car I've owned.

I personally agree that it doesn't *look* like a $100k car; however technologically speaking it seems like a $100k car. you feel like you are driving the future in it.

At the end of the day we all have attributes that we find most important in a vehicle - Be it the exterior of the vehicle, the interior, or even the technology.

Regarding Teslas, I think the model S is the best looking. The other variants seem like a lazy attempt at having a fleet wide design language, and in my opinion it falls short

I confess they all look alike to me...

So the distinguishing exterior features between a $65k car:

And a $100k+ car:

Is, well....

And they both look to me sorta:

So I suppose there is something to be said for having a unique and recognizable exterior design:

Neither EQS nor Lucid Air are my cup of tea as well. But among those 2 with Tesla, i would rather staying with Tesla.

Agree. My wife said it looks like a Minivan. BTW I think the same about the interior. It is too minimalist. And there are exposed cheap scratchy plastics e.g the lower center console. Lower door panels, etc. which are nicer materials in other cars. The car costs more than the Corvette C8 LT3 I ordered which has full leather on every surface.

I told her she only has to drive it for 9-12 months till the Mercedes arrives.

That's no simple co-incidence. Franz von Holzhausen was chief of design at Mazda before moving to Tesla.

I am sure that the Model 3 design was mostly inspired by aerodynamics, but I can't help but feel like there is a strong resemblance to a 2009 Mazda 3.

To be fair though, it's only a $100k car if you option it out, most of that is stuff you don't really see just sitting in it, like dynamic handling, speaker upgrades, etc.

The dealer demos I tested weren't optioned out with the nicest interior or luxury pack. I just had to imagine that the leather doors and stitched seats take it up a notch.

You could just add leather and luxury and be at $87k. Although maybe the point still stands that it may not look like an $87k car even built as such

sor fair enough. My wife just doesn't care about the EV/tech aspect. If it was up to her, it would be an X7 or escalade. A lot of luxury and a third row.

From what I’ve read on here the leather does level it up which I’m hopeful for because I do find the sensetec in the IX I tested just eh. I thought the same way about the X5 but when optioned with Merino leather and the crystal glass knobs and matte wood trim along with the Skylounge pano roof I think it looks the part and can hold its own against a Range Rover or highly spec’ed Cayenne. Hoping the same applies here.

I agree it's not a $100k looking vehicle, but not many SUVs are. Really just the Range Rover and G-wagon actually look of that caliber. The rest look like mom cars. The iX's interior gives me strong minivan vibes too.

X7 is way better looking than the iX obviously, but it's still a bland mommy mobile.

Regarding the interior, the pass through area between the front seats screams minivan.

I don't know, that seems like kind of a stretch to me. The Toyota Sienna doesn't have an open footwell, nor the Chrysler Pacifica. The Honda Odyssey sort of has a half space but not really an open foot well. Screen shots included.

I've driven a lot of cars, trucks, and vans over the years and the ones that have this open space most are actually trucks and SUVs, and many older cars, but any kind of car can have the open space. It isn't a trait of a single category. I tend to prefer it anyway over the tight cockpit feel. I don't find it very consequential, just less cramped.

The one thing that *would* say minivan about an interior is a low seat-level console between the front seats.

I'll admit my reference is about 20 years old, lol. 2002 Honda Odyssey. And yes it's a stretch. Just what it made me think of.

Even that doesn't have an open footwell though. It's almost the opposite of the iX, the console of the iX extends forward, and is open at the feet/under the dash. Your photo is closed under the dash at the footwell, and the open space instead encroaches into the console area at the knees/thighs.

I agree that it's possible to find van photos that would have open footwell. I just disagree that it is specifically a minivan trait.

Looking at a lot of car interiors now because this has gotten me curious to validate my impressions

So far the closest layout to the iX as far as console and footwell goes is the Rivian R1T. In my memory this is a pretty common truck layout but funny enough not many of the recent models do this.

And M2 CS doesn't look like a $93k car from the outside and M5 CS doesn't look like a $150k car from the outside either. But I'd gladly pay each for either of those cars.

Trying to value exterior looks is a foolish exercise. A Model Y or X looks like a $20k car.

You are more correct than me. The flat floor up front just gives me similar vibes.
