i4 M50 real world range is just REALLY great!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I know we have a few "locals" on here, and many have been to Los Angeles (sorry if you have, lucky if you have not )

I spend most days driving around Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Agoura, Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks. And we live up in a canyon (elevation about 2000). 60-75% of my driving is streets and the rest freeway with speeds up to 75mph.

Just charged my car today and at 90%, Range is 275.

When driving, the range estimation is so, so much better than Tesla, Audi and Jaguar. The i4 guess-o-meter range estimator is always updating...adding and subtracting range and battery % and is really spot on (fyi, the Jaguar never, ever adds range or %, even with heavy down hill regen braking).

At first I thought I would be sorry with the M50 range...but I am getting easily 250-260 miles with fun driving and close to 300 with good driving

Anyone not choosing the M50 because of range anxiety....don't fear. I am so damn impressed with range! And performance, handling and Freude am Fahren is

3.75 kWh / mile , on a 80.9 kWh battery would give you about 21 miles of range at 100% SOC.

This is going to take us a bit to get used to

306 miles range would mean consumption would be 0.26 kWh/ mile or 26kWh/100 miles.

I take it you are running the 19” wheels?

On the 20” alloys I can regularly get around 245-250 miles and this is running the battery down to about 30% and doing the calculations. For me around 85% is town and short journeys of less than 10 miles. One thing I have noticed in the few months owning the car is how accurate the gauge is.

Wait, did BMW change the usable battery kWh again?

I always thought it was 81.5 kWh for USA markets but 80.7 kWh for ROW?

It's still 81.5 my bad! I don't know where I read that and it apparently stuck with me

Yeah, I have the 19" 860M wheels (and they are my fav BMW wheels I've had in years).

I have been driving EV since 2017 (BMW, Jaguar, Tesla, Audi and Porsche)...and the i4 is crazy range accurate! I'm beyond impressed!

Today's charge: 70%, 208 miles. And it's hot today...98F. I am curious what my charges will yield with 30-50F temps!

Still 10% over EPA estimates. Good news, this is as hot is it normally gets in the summer.

I take it you do not live in the Calabasas/Woodland/West Hills area of Los Angeles 98F is a "nice" day for July and August. Many weeks and weeks we have 105-110F. Sept. 2020 we hit 120F here (look it up on L.A. Times, NOAA....)

But, yeah...I am stoked with my M50 range!

Yeah, another GREAT test by Tom! He did 239 miles in an M50 with the 20" wheels on a warm New Jersey day. Climate control on low. Beat the EPA rating by 12 miles!

Over here in the UK we don't quite get the hot temperatures you do so this affects the range a bit, when I am at 50% SOC I only see about 128-130miles.

There again I am also on the 20s plus in the UK the tyre width is 255 at the front and 285 at the back.

What mode does everyone drive in and what’s your mode in these modes.

This morning it was a bit colder so my 80% SOC was only yielding 211 miles of range in ECO Pro but if I switched to either COMFORT or SPORT this dropped to only 183 miles of range. This difference can’t all be down to the drop in output from the electric motors, there must be other factors like AirCon, better regen on braking etc.

It’s amazing how temperature affects the batteries/range, stepped into the car at lunch time and despite 75% SOC it showed the same range as this morning.

So you say BMW has the best thermal battery management...I don't disagree although I can tell you that there is a huge drop off in range on my 330e in January here in Northern VA versus now (June)...I routinely get about 28 miles on a charge currently and when it is cold, best is usually 17-18 miles. 30% losses in colder temps seems excessive to me but....I know the i4 is a completely different battery and power train, and I am sure it is equipped with more technology than the 330e...just whining a bit about the 330e's winter woes.

PS - my i4 M50 should start production next week (19 June) so by the time it gets here, will be getting cooler again, so we will see
